Thanks.

Drew...my 165 had the same problem, so I followed the procedure Don describes below....adjusted the fingers thru the access cover.

This is a very common problem. Adjust the 2 stage clutch as above entries describe.

Drew: If your clutch pedal free travel is correct,1/4" to 3/8". To adjust that there is a hole in the shaft that the clutch pedal is clamped to, loosen the bolt in the pedal put a pin in hole pullshaft clockwise till you feel it contact inside, hold it get clearence for pedal underthe stop and tighten bolt TIGHT. Two people can do this easier. If this don't correct problem then remove plate under tractor at flywheel should have 4 bolts. You can see the pressure plate assembly, there are three bolts with lock nuts spaced evenly around the pressure plate. Check the measurement of the distance between the head of the bolt and the plate behind it. It can be set to .060 on each bolt by using 2 1/2" wrench's, loosen lock nut then set clerance, hold bolt and tighten lock nut, this will release the p.t.o clutch sooner when pushing pedal down. If your distance is at .060 when you check it then you will have to split tractor and repair clutch. Hope this helps you, good luck. Don Snyder

Thanks so much for the guidance.
Here's some further info if it helps: I can engage the PTO at the Ground speed setting (pushing down lever) but it's the engine speed I can't put it in.
Also, I do not feel any distinct difference between "1st stage" and 2nd stage clutch when I depress it. Does this narrow it down? If not, I'll follow your original advice.
I was also told that if the tractor sat for a long time (which I believe it did before I bought it) that sometimes that will cause the pressure plate or flywheel to stick.

Hey Drew, this may or may not be a help to you, but one way I tell if the PTO clutch is releasing or stuck is this: With the tractor switched off and the key in my pocket, I take a long pto shaft and hook it to the PTO on the tractor. I then support it so it is level and square with the tractor. I then wire the clutch pedal to the running board down as far as it will go with the pto lever engaged. next try turning the pto shaft out on the end with a bar or something that will give you leverage. I have freed up stuck pto clutches like that, and sometimes that don"t work either. I wouldn"t put a lot of power in trying to turn it like this. You may get hurt or damage something. The other way is to place a pipewrench or bar,(something about 3 or 4 foot long) At an angle like say 10:00 position,on the end of the same long pto shaft and hang a big weight on the end of the wrench/bar. then go depress the clutch slowly and see if it will release, dropping the heavy weight. (Keep the kids and dogs away from all this!)This may not help you out, but it gives you more information to research your problem. Good Luck; South Ga. Plowboy

Big Dean told me I could adjust my clutch to as little as .040. The last I heard his CD is still available. Bill

Drew,

Sounds like the PTO clutch as part of the two stage clutch is not releasing. Try pushing the clutch pedal as far as it goes before engaging the PTO. Then check adjustment and linkage to be sure there is no binding. Then break the tractor and replace all worn parts.
