I am trying to rebuild the front end of my MF245 diesel. The shop manuals don't give any detail to major part connections and brackets. My son hit a tree with this one and busted up the front end. I cannot tell in some cases what hold up what. Does anyone have a picture of a '75 or so MF245 diesel showing shots of the front end? Thanks,
Jon

Here"s the freshest pics of the alternator area. I hope these will help you finish up and get the 245 back to work. Any more questions, just ask.

Thanks so much! You've really been a help! The pictures are really making a difference getting things back together. I have the front support on now. It took a bit until I found that it had a mix of metric and english thread bolts on it. The old one didn't have zerk holes, this one does. I was able to get the radiator repaired instead of having to replace it. I need to find the rubber and foam seals that go between the body parts and the front grill.
The thing has set so long (the 6 years) that the chloride fill in the tires is eating the rear tire air valves up. I am hoping to remove the fill and put inner tubes in it. I probably will have to get a patch to go over the valve holes. I am still amazed that my son is ok. What a blessing! That and that I found that axle support for 250.00.. the oil pan too! What a mess it was. I will try to post pictures of it when I get it going..if I do and something in the engine is wrong. I hope not!

Yep, when this bolster broke it took out the radiator too but got it patched up. Unfortunately you may be needing some rim work if the Cacl is leaking, maybe not. You definitely got a deal on the oil pan and bolster, glad it worked out for you. Those rubber strips can be "farmered" if ya can"t find the originals. I look forward to seeing it back together and running, they are fine tractors. Glad to help, you"ve got the hard part.

Wow! That is very helpful! I am wondering about the guide studs on the bottom. It looks like there are nuts on them. Is that so?
Can you get a picture of the altenator mount?
This is great. Thanks.

I won"t be at the farm for a day or so(rain) but the alt is attached to the bracket just behind the fuel filter, with the long bracket for adjustment per the pic. Like most mounts, there will be a spacer or two with a bolt through it to allow some swivel to tighten the belt. The red frame you see is the bolster that I replaced, some of the bolts have nuts some don"t. I "think" the bottom ones have nuts, the top are just bolts. I"ll post back on this original message if I can get another pic. If ya still have questions, just ask.

Thanks again so much!
I was able to get some more of it together yesterday. I also found the the bolster bolts are not standard thread 5/8-11 like I thought. I had the foresight 5 years ago to order the new british tread bolts..but forgot that I had. I stumbled across them..they worked like a champ. Missing the long one though. That may be hard to find. On the bolster, do you have grease zirks on the support bearings? The new bolter has threaded holes for what I am assuming are grease fitting holes. My old one broke right there, so they're gone.
Also, the bracket for the altenator that I have is bent 90 deg. I don't know if it was like that originally, or if it was bent in the accident. It was hanging on by broken pieces.
Whenever you can get the picture is just fine and very appreciated.
Jon

While I wait for the pics let me try to descibe from memory the alternator setup. There are two brackets, one attached to the block and parallel to the side of the block(behind the fuel filter, held by 2 or 3 bolts), and another that is fairly straight and long, with a gap in one end to adjust the belt tightness, see pics 3 and 4 above. The block one has a short 90 degree bend at the end(normal) that is attached to the bottom of the alt. The one you have that is bent is "probably" the previously straight one that has one hole in one end and the gap in the other. The single hole end is attached to the engine front, the gap goes toward the alt to allow adjustment. There may be a spacer or two used also. I think I only have one zerk but some have two. They should be where the grease can reach the axle pin, on top of the bolster. Good time to renew the bushings if needed. As far as the bolts go, so long as they are the correct length, pitch, and grade they should work, probably grade 5 or 8(SAE). Will post pics when I have them.

I can't help you on the tractor, but you didn't mention-

Hows your son? Ramming into a tree couldn't have been too good...

Thanks for the concern on my son. He was 14 at the time..six years ago. The tractor has set there since. He was greatly shaken up but that was it! He hit that tree at full road gear speed too! God was watching over him that day!

I was thinking the same thing, he was fortunate to find a new axle mount and even more fortunate(to say the least) if his son survived.

Thanks for the reply!
In the wreck, (my son hit a tree at full speed) the front end tore off taking the timing gear case with it. I need to see how the brackets for the altenator, power steering pump, front axle mounts and radiator all fit togeter.
I was fortunate enough to find a new axle mount here on YT for a fraction of the going price.
I appreciate the help a lot!
Jon

I don"t have the books close by but the alternator and power steering should go back easily, about the only things that look like they were put on as an afterthought. The axle mount, also called a bolster, mounts to the front of the engine block/oil pan. Hopefully the connection points weren"t broken off. Did the fan extension get bent? If the timing gear case was damaged ya might need some major engine work before the front end goes back on. If you give me a couple of days I might be able to get a close up pic or three of the front.

That would be great. The timing cover front and back broke. The oil pan mounts broke too. I have replaced all of that though. I had to lift the head off, pull the cam out and replace the covers. It's all coming together, but it's taken me so long that I can't remember how it goes. The brackets that held the altenator and power steering pump were bent. So, I don't know what the original set up was. All in all, I have the hard stuff done and need to get front together. The axle support is where I am at now. Looks like just 4 bolts plus the studs on the bottom. I don't know if those had nuts or if something else coupled to them. A picture of that area would help! Thanks!

Yes, GOD was with him that day! I will try to get pictures tomorrow, Saturday, and attempt to post here tomorrow night. Six years? Man, I can"t remember what I did 3 weeks ago much less six years ago. On the good news side the bolster bolts up easily and the rest is just a process of elimination, you"ve done the hard part already. BTW, I replaced one 245 bolster when it broke off while my uncle was driving it so I"ve been down that road.

....an original MF "Operators Manual" does have quality pics of the front engine area, an excellent investment. Available at most dealers and online(watch out for 'reprints', the pic quality suffers).

Look left under Galleries, "tractor photos" and insert Massey 245, there are three pics. I"ve got two 245"s, what"s confusing?
