Shifting problem on MF35

I"m planning to buy a 1963 MF35 Deluxe in the next few days (I"ll try and post some pictures when I get it). Everything is in pretty nice original condition (not too farmerized), but shifting to first and reverse is tricky. It won"t shift directly from neutral to either first or reverse. The trick is to shift to third and then in one movement go up and over to reverse. When in reverse, it"s easy to shift straight down into first. The owner says this has been necessary for quite a few years (his father in law owned it before him).

I"m fairly familiar with the 8N gearbox, but I don"t know anything about the 35. I have already ordered a service manual, but I would like to get a head start thinking about it.

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi,
There are no real problems in the gearbox that would cause that. More likely to be clutch adjustment. Have you tried engaging gear with the clutch pedal fully depressed? Its possible that the second stage is overlapping the first and whilst you may think you are pressing the pedal far enough it needs to go further.
The manual will give details of adjustment but come back if you need any more help.

David,

Thanks for the help. I noticed when testing the dual-stage clutch I really had to step on the pedal before the PTO would stop spinning. There seems to be maybe an inch or so of free travel, and I didn't feel the PTO clutch until probably an inch or two above the foot rest. I don't know if this is normal, but I would have thought the second clutch would be felt earlier.

I will try and make sure the pedal is all the way down when I get a chance. It may be this weekend before I can pick up the tractor.

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,
looks like we are going the right way.
There should be approximately 3/8 inch gap under the front footplate bar when the pedal is pressed before release starts to occur. The second stage should come in at about halfway to the floor. The PTO without load should stop turning with the pedal about one inch from max.
If it needs adjustment come back and I'll take you through it.

David,

I brought the tractor home today and tried pushing the pedal hard all the way down, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I still can shift to reverse or first only by going from third to reverse. I can shift between first and reverse, but not from neutral.

I don't feel second stage until just a couple of inches or so above the floor board, so it sounds like some adjustment is needed. Do you think this would affect shifting to reverse and first though?

Thanks,
Shawn
