This year I baled some fluffy hay in spring. The bales were loose. Do I need to tighten the bale chamber more or would bale retarders correct the problem.

Try making bigger windrows/driving faster. I find with some of the older balers that they really like to be fed to work properly.

By all means crank down the bale chamber, those #3"s dont like light windrows or fine slippery hay. Bale retarders will help a lot, i installed some out of an old McCormick baler with good results.

Hi, Assume that by bale retarders you mean hay dogs as we call them in the UK. Light fluffy material will only form decent bales if you can feed quickly enough to prevent the material collapsing and springing back as the plunger withdraws. Next problem is that to get decent bales they will be very heavy. Probably more trial and error. If you are baling stationary your bales will probably be irregular in length.

Hay dogs and hay retarders are two different things here in the USA. There are two spring loaded hay dogs, one on the bottom of the chamber and one on the top of the chamber. The hay retarders are plates with halfmoon shapped indentations that are bolted to the side of the chamber. I think there is room for four of them.Probably came factory equipt with two.

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for that. The spring loaded ones in the top and bottom of the chamber come under the description of hay dogs here in the UK.

next question. Where do I get a set of retarders? Is this something I can get new, or from a parts machine.
