MF50 lift hydraulics

My MF50 has a hard time lifting my old cutter (they've been paired up for at least 27 years now). With the rockshaft lever all the way back it will only lift the cutter about a foot off the ground, and it jerks as it goes up. With no load on the lift arms it will raise up all the way without hesitation. I've heard that I can remove an inspection plate so that I can observe the hydraulic pump in action, but I'm not totally sure which plate this is; the parts and service manuals don't call anything "inspection plate". Anyone have any recomendations of what to look for...starting with easiest/cheapest first? Serial # SHM 515667

Robert

You may have a leaking lift cylinder. There should be a crcular plate on the right hand side of the tractor by your right heel. The dipstick tobe may be in the plate also. Open that upand start the engine and make sure that the hydraulic pump is engaged(if you have live hydraulics it will be). UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES PLACE YOUR HANDS IN THE COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING! Move the lever to the full up position.Take a flashlight and look up toward the top of the lift cover where the lift cylinder is located and look for leaks. Anything more than a few drops is a leak. Repeat with an implement on the hitch. See if there"s a leak under these conditions.

My old TO-35's lift system was getting slow and tired.

I added one qt. of Lucas Oil stablizer to the 8 gal transmission/hydraulic reservoir.

Lift will now pull front wheels of tractor off ground as it did many years ago. Remember my system was just old and tired, all lift sytems were working properly.

My system also has the proper 90 weight mineral oil, not some stuff purchased from the local parts store that says on label that it will work in a MF.
