Massey 35 blowing excessive smoke

Hi, I need some help/advice. I have a Massey ME35 or MF35 (not sure which) petrol/gas 4 cylinder. I am a novice to mechanics. I have just replaced a head gasket and welsch plug, and since doing this the tractor now pumps smoke continuously out from the exhaust. The smoke seems to be blue/grey in colour. At first I thought it was a carbie and mixture issue, so I pulled the carbie apart, cleaned and replaced to no avail. Next I drained the oil as I suspected the oil was to thin (due to noticable oil dripping into carbie from the inlet/exhaust manifold and felt whatever seals are inside the head and block were not doing their job due to thin oil) and replaced with a thicker oil. Again to no avail. I have spoken to neighbors who all are willing to help me but are giving me differing views on what may be the problem. So far I"ve been told that it may be Valve Stem seals, Piston Rings, Valve seat guides. Is there anyone out there who may have come across this issue before after changing a head gasket. If so, I would appreciate some advice on how to fix. Thanks in advance.

Hey thanks for the reply Jerry. I don't know what blowby means but I can tell you that it smokes more when irevs are increased and it even sounds as if its choking itself at full throttle, so based on your theory this would be the oil control rings. Would these need to be replaced? If so where are they located and can you replace them without removing the head again?

Blowby usually shows up with a lot of smoke coming out of the crankcase vent tube. Poor oil control will show up in the exhaust as will valve stem seal/valve guide problems. the difference is the operating load. At low load, it"s valveguides and/or stem seals. At high load it"s the oil control rings. Load is determined by throttle plate position which you, unfortunately, can"t see. Wide open or near wide open throttle would occur when pulling a plow engaged in the ground. That"s high load. Low load is idling. Reving an engine with the transmission in neutral is also low load. So when you are trying to determine under what load conditions you are seeing the smoke remember these examples.
if you are seeing a lot of smoke at high load then you oil control rings are shot. Check the compression on each cylinder to see if the rings are also worn. The head has to come off and the rods removed from the crank to be able to get the pistons out and replace the rings.

If the smoke is bluish and the smoke appears heavily at idle and low powers but seems to reduce at high powers its the intake valve stem seals and/or valve guides. The pressure in the intake manifold is below atmospheric at idle and low powers while in the valve covers the pressure is near atmosheric. thus oil is forced intp the intake valve area during idle and low powers. If in occurs heavily at higher power and less at lower powers than it "s probably the oil control rings worn or stuck. Blowby should increase under these condions because pressure in the cylinder are near maximum with the throttle plate at or near wide open.
