are all models of the 74 plow supposed to have a tailwheel? the one on our farm does not (auction purchase). some of the posts in the archives seem to assume it has one. being a 4 bottom i would think a tailwheel would be helpful.

I have a model 72 4 bottom which has a tail wheel but is missing its coulters. I adapted it to pull behind my Massey 1100 for lack of another tractor to pull it with. I would like to find some coulters to put back on it but have found that here in Texas there are virtually no moldboard plows left which arent stuck on the back of somebodys 9N. If anybody would like a sketch of the adapter I built I will try to upload it to this sight as a picture or word file. If that doesnt work you can reach me at my email. [email protected].
I got parts through a place in West Texas (real town) called Westex www.westexfire.com They build fire negines besides having the best selection of repair farm parts of anyplace Ive been.

No luck uploading drawing. Can send word file with ACAD drawing of thing.

Karl, my MF-74 has a long landside and the trailing furrow wheel. yours will plow much better and be easier to pull with the furrow wheel. My brother has one that someone has removed the furrow wheel and I know that they do a much better job with the wheel. You can still get Operator Manual and a Parts Manual from MF dealer. I found the Operator Manual to be very good, tells exactly how to set all aspects of the plow, adjustment to tractor etc. I rebuilt my 4 X 14 and a 4 X 16 for my BIL. Those Model 74 are very good plows. Tom

Hi Karl,The 74 plow had the furrow wheel assembly
as standard equip. It is probably laying in some
previous owners shed. The parts book and owners
manual on the 74 all show this. It is to your
advantage to have it, but with some creativity
you may be able to find a long landslide with a
"flute" in it or at least one with the cast heel.
That would help some and you could get by. Chuck

thanks. your last name (bergstrom) happens to personalize this thread. It reminds me of an older neighbor man with that name when i was about 2 or 4 in the 80s who had a massey ferguson tractor with loader. apparently i was quite fascinated with it. he gave me a "bucket ride" up and down. better than any carnival ride! I had a massey pedal tractor back then too, but don't recall if i met his tractor first or had mine already. He was quite a kid friendly person, i think he even took time and played with some of mine or his little tractors and balers with me, even though my dad was there to talk business--maybe he was a seed corn dealer? amazing the things we remember all of a sudden when just a couple words/names combine in the same topic.

Not all did. Some had a longer rear landslide with a wear plate/heel that served the same purpose as a tailwheel. How well it did the same job is subject to opinion. (I've got a #74 parts manual that shows the 2 types)

thank you. i'll take a look at that backend sometime. hopefully(or unfortunately) it will have the longer landslide. I'd like to see if i can get it set up right to plow sometime. wish it wasn't a cat 1, all our tractors are too big, all ii and one iii
