We have just tried to start our old tractor which has a gear stick starting method. We can't find the right spot to make motor spin. HELP SOS. HELP.
Thought - can (should) we change this to a push button activated starting system? Any input at all would be most welcome and most appreciated!!

You could remove the wires and install a heavy duty starter switch like the one used on the 1950 Chevs, but if you remove the switch and put a spot of weld (I use cast or 308 stainless welding rod) on the lever that contacts the switch that should fix it. Test the switch first,It may need to be cleaned. Hope this helps. Larry
P.S. I'm looking for for oil pump gears for my TE-A20 80mm bore engine.

On your transmission cover there should be an "S" almost like it is another gear. That is your starting position. Just pretend like you are shifting it into "S". My TEA20 wouldn't do anything either. I took the starter button out of the top of the torque tube and replaced it with a new one. I could only get one for a TO20 so I tried it. The button was a little short so I had to tach weld a nut onto it. After doing that it turns over fine. Having the shift lever be used to start the tractor was a nice safety feature though and if possible it would be a good idea to keep it that way.

Great advice, sounds like the solution to our problem. I agree with your suggestion regarding safety feature. Are you in U.S.A.? We are downunder.

Russel, If you are going to rewire the starter circuit why not go with a key switch and solenoid combination, That way you could lock out your tractor from the kids/grandkids. I would think this to be the safest way to go. I have a 4 year old that loves to climb up and play on all my tractors and find it impossible to keep him off of them 100% of the time. Johnny

The correct starting position for the gearshift starting should be hard ahead and to the right. A push button is certainly ok I have two TEA one has key switch and push button on the dash other has a ford switch and a ford solenoid both work ok I have also handcrank started one of them and it was surprising how easy it started.

Rod,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Have tried to the right and hard ahead - alas no luck. Just wondering if conversion on your TEA's were done by your goodself or if they were purchased already converted.

They were already converted. You could have a wiring problem also check connection on the starter and make sure you have a good ground. you can jump tractor by grounding the booster cable somewhere on the block then touch other cable to the starter hot wire if it turns over you probably have a bad switch. It should be positive ground?

Rod;

I noticed in your post that you said "Hard right and ahead", the post before said"Hard ahead and right", not sure but that might make a differance or maybe that's what you really meant.
