Here is the facts - new battery the largest you can get, new battery cables, new starter and alternator tested fine, no lights or any other electrical gadgets hooked to the tractor. We have had a kill switch put in and battery still doesn"t have enough juice to start the tractor. The tractor is outside all the time, and we live in temps that go to 30F and colder here. We have replaced the battery 3 times, everything works great then it won"t start at all. It seems to try, then the more your try to start it the deader the battery gets. Any suggestions, we are getting very frustrated, and tired of pushing a wheelbarrow through a foot of snow to get hay. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem on my Nissan PU. Took off the starter, disassembled it, cleaned the slip rings and regreased the bushings and she was good as new. Then when my MF65 starter was slow to turn over, I did the same thing. In both I found severely dirty rings. This is the part that the brushes make contact with. Should be shiny copper. I sanded them down with steel wool and cleaned the residue off with brake cleaner.

If you are not comfortable with doing this yourself, I am sure there is an auto electric shop near you. Have 'em take a look inside.

Hi, yes it is a cold climate model, it has the correct engine oil, starter is facing the south, (winds are from North and NE like last night) but no blankets. This afternoon I disconnected the battery, brought it inside, then a couple hours later I charged it for another two hours. Returned it to the tractor and it started perfectly. I will check the connections tomorrow in the daylight. Would a battery warmer help, like the kind you put on a vehicles battery? The only thing is the battery will start a transport truck, I was told it will start anything in the cold.

I agree with David, double check all the connections. Our super 90 had this problem this winter, new battery etc. I was thinking the brushes were bad or stuck in the starter, until I noticed how hot the stud that goes into the starter motor was after trying to start it. The top nut was tight, but the bottom one was loose, after tightening that one, everything has worked great, even below 0 this winter.

Just a few suggestions from the somewhat warmer UK.
Is the tractor a cold climate model?
Do you have the correct engine oil for working in your temperatures as it will make the engine harder to turn if its too thick?
Have you tried parking the starter motor side out of the prevailing wind or covering it with blankets etc?
Have you removed the battery and kept it warm overnight then refitted it. If so what results did you get?
Does the addition of a second battery improve things?
Has the starter motor been checked/overhauled to ensure that there are no problems inside?
Are all connections absolutely sound?
Hope the above might be of some help.
