Hello all. I'm an IH guy through and through, sorry, but I run an 1105 Massey farmin. And I am having a few problems with it...

First and foremost, she burns oil. Like, buy it by the case or barrel and it will last you the summer. I probably add a gallon per day, maybe more, I'm scared to add it up. This is running 9 foot discbine. It NEVER smokes, besides the little Perkins puff at the beginning, and has great power and throttle response. But I have no leaks, no drips, nothing in the water, and surely nothing spitting out of the exhaust. I thought at a gallon a day I would see it spraying my windshield. What is going on here? I believe it has been overhauled in the past (same family has owned the tractor), when it would have been (hour-wise) I'm not sure, but I can't find where the oil could be going.

Also, I have two other gripes about it... I have no brakes, like they don't kick back and I only have half response from one of them. What is going on there? And the PTO decides to turn itself off once in a while, I'll be mowin along and suddenly whirr..... if I put the clutch in and wait, the diskbine will kick back on but I have to let it run for about 10 seconds, if I put hay into it again it will do the same thing in about 40-50 feet. I have awesome hydraulic lever response and power steering, but I have nothing for brakes or PTO. I would like to use the machine on the silage blower but if it dared to do something like that just once it would be disasterous. The discbine isn't even all that power consuming, we run it with the 1655 Oliver without a problem.

If anybody can give me any Massey insight I would throughally appreciate it. If it helps anyone, I grew up on a 165 Massey and it is still one of my favorite tractors of all time!!

Rear seal may have went in the engine, and it's dumping oil in the transmission. Check your trans fluid level. You brakes probably need to be bled. If I'm not mistaken, 1105's PTO and multipower was hydraulically controlled rather than mechanically. Posibbly you are losing hydraulic pressure and that is kicking your pto out of gear. Just a few Thoughts.

A gallon a day! It has to be going up the pipe or you'd see it. How many hours? You are not going to find too many engines better than the Perkins 354. If it needs it, and you are mechanically inclined, it is a fairly easy in frame rebuild and then good for another 6000 hours.

Brakes. On our tractors (all '50's, '60's, '70's vintage) the rubber seals in the master and slave cylinders eventually turn into plastic and crack. Can be fixed cheap if the bores are good and you can find cups, seals and orings that fit. If not get parts at dealers.

Can't help you with PTO.

Good Luck,

JP.

There have been many 1105's worked hard over the years around here, they are mostly well built tractors. Is the stink pipe belting our the smoke? It has to be going somewhere for sure, just have to find out where. If there are too many things wrong with it,it may be worth a look to see if you can trade it for another one,may be cheaper by quite abit,as they are usually bought fairly cheap now.Not really much in the way of help, but if it was mine,I wouldn't put up with it very long.Best of luck,pd.
