My Multi Power on my 165 stopped working and I was wondering where I should start looking first to try and fix it. It just doesn't do anything when you put the lever in the "up" position. It was working when I first purchased the tractor. I've adjusted on the linkage and that didn't help. When I pull out he dipstick to check the oil level the oil on the stick looks "foamy." Not sure if this is normal or not. Guess it has to be the pump?

Hi,
If this is an instant failure, a strong possibility is the pipe which connects the pump to the MP valve at the front of the transmission, but inside has broken. You should still have MP 'low'.
We have replace quite a few over the years on 165's in particular. It can be checked by removing the hydraulic cover or transmission cover. Are you able to carry out any pressure tests?

David,

How do I pressure test?

I guess the "low hanging fruit" is to take off the transmission cover? Does the hose break anywhere in particular? How hard is it to replace the nefarious hose?

The best thing I like about using the Mulit-Power is that I get engine braking. Sometimes I like driving over and around pond banks for a cheap thrill. However without the MP even my nerves get rattled.

Hi,
There are a number of tests that can be carried out if you have the correct equipment. Probably the easiest one is the MP relief valve.
Looking from the left side of the tractor you will see the two pipes coming up out of the transmission casing.
Disconnect the rear fitting and fit a hydraulic gauge to it.
The gauge should be scaled to read at least 1000 psi or 75 kg/cm2.
Minimum acceptable figures are;
Warm the oil to working temp either by driving or allowing the 3pt relief valve to blow in short bursts. Driving preferred.
Engine running at around 550rpm 650psi 46kg/cm2 2000rpm 750psi 53kg/cm2
If you have no pressure this indicates a break somewhere, likely to be the pipe. It consists of a flexible and rigid section. The rigid section has a banjo fitting at the rear end. The break normally occurs here.
If you have reduced pressure at the test you could be looking at wear anywhere in the system and will probably require removal of the hydraulic cover and splitting between the transmission and rear casing.
There are a lot of possible causes and it might be wise to have your local MF man carry out a non-committal test. Please let us know what you find.

Personally I don"t care much for MP and have used it on only a couple of tractors therefore I"m not as "up" on it as many here. Have you done a search on this page? Lot"s of articles about it. Not always the pump, could be a hose leaking or seal. Bad part is you may have a split coming your way. Hope you find an easy fix.
