I am thinking about buying one of these. It is a fair distance away so I want to find out what I can before I go. The ad says model 65 diesel, power steering, live pto.
I want to know roughly what horsepower these tractors had originally(think it may have varied-don"t know the year)? Does any one have a rough idea of value? It says it"s a working tractor and needs a little tin work.
I want to be able to brush hog some fields and maybe hay the same fields. Wondering what the general feeling is about these tractors
Thanks

I have had a 65 gas for almost 15 years now; great tractor. We use it as a loader tractor, to brush hog trails in our bush on very hilly land, and last year used it to put up over 4,000 square bales with a NH273 baler. It never missed a beat. I added a front pump for the loader, since the internal pump is so slow I could have a cup of coffee while waiting for the loader to go up.

Ditto on the front pump. Makes a world of difference in the utility of the tractor.

Great tractor. Very reliable, and as my ground is hilly I like the low center of gravity and wide track. I use mine to pull a 469 MoCo, and a 68 baler with a 4 ton capacity kicker wagon. The 6 ton wagon I have gets heavy real fast. No problem with 100+ 40 lb bales on flat ground or a gentle slope, but on the hills any more than about 80 bales and the rig will push the tractor, even with filled tires and wheel weights, so I have to be careful.

No problems with a IH 550 spreader either.

the 65 has lots of power to pull your baler. I have a Fordson Dexta rated at 38 to 42 hours power, and I have no problem pulling my baler, with a 8 ft x 20ft flat rack wagon that holds 210 bales. No problem

My book says 48hp for diesel. Around where I live the price may run anywhere from $2000 to $4000 depending on condition.

Just bought a 1961 model 65 diesel about a month ago myself. Drove over 250 miles to pick it up and it was well worth the trip! Mine is in good shape overall but has a few detail items that need to be taken care of (like any old tractor will). From the factory they had right at 50 hp. Power steering sure makes it nice to work with too. I plan on using mine for mowing and such as well. I unloaded, moved and stacked 21 5 X 6 round bales with it last week (approx 1,600 lbs ea.) The front tires got a little light every now and then but the 65 never bogged or hestitated a bit. I sure like mine and I think you will find several others on this forum who will agree. Suggest you do a search on Big Dean's site and look at the checklist of things to look at when buying one.

Good Luck,
Dan

My dad bought his new in the early 60's. Always maintained it well, and it is still going strong. None of the neibors still run their JD's, Internationals, Ford's etc. that they bought around the same time. A tough, durable and easy on fuel tractor thats hard to beat.

I think my grandfather had one also. I'm really trying to pin down a horsepower range to know if I can expect it to pull a bailer. Any idea?
Thanks
