I'm following up DavidP's and Danperkins comments on my problem. I inspected the clutch mechanism today - but first had to drain over 2 cups of oil from the bell housing! Obviously the problem... I can see oil weeping from the gearbox seal, so will have to do both. Finger clearances looked fine - .005" variation in one.

My next question is: if I keep the weep holes clear, could I avoid doing a clutch job for another 50-60 hours or so i.e. until winter? Would the oil on the lining burn off eventually, or is it likely to keep slipping?

Many thanks, David B.

Hello David, long time no see.

When you finaly split the tractor, if the clutch material is very little worn, and you want to save it, it is possible to get it clean, but it takes time.
You need to remove the worst dirt of the clutch plate with gasoline, or something like that, and then you need a big casserole, and boil it. Just keep it boiling for a while, and change water, several times. This should get it fine again.
Not like brand new, but something like 95% or better.
You can use soap in between too.

Hi again,
Not a good situation to be in. Have you checked the amount of oil in the transmission? Is there any possibility that it is overfilled? Do you have any implements that require a lot of oil..a trailer with a two stage ram for example? If you do not, lower the oil level to a minimum safe point. This should reduce the amount of oil finding its way through.
Once oil reaches the linings it is absorbed. Wiping the linings with a solvent is at best only temporary. Wish I could offer some hope that it would last until winter but Sod's Law states that it will become unusable at the time when you most need it.

Thanks for all comments. DavidP a good hint about keeping the trans oil level low. Unfortunately it is chronically low due to leaking PTO seal. Bill, good hints about how to boil the plate - I'll wait til I get the plates out to see how worn they are...

In the meantime, I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Thanks again, David B.

i have had some luck with brake cleaner. had one slipping but could brake down right at the time so i used NONFLAMABLE brake cleaner. plugged weep hole and pulled starter put about 2 quarts in bell housing replaced starter and run for 10 to 15 minns. with clutch pushed in drained and repeated been working for over a year. keep your weep hole clean and see what happens
