Second newbie question on my MF 65. The right side brake grabs going either forward or reverse. Just touch the pedal and the brake locks. Then you have to lift the pedal with your toe or it drags. I read in the archives something about a broken spring. Could someone enlighten me a bit on this?

Thanks,
Dan

Well guys, it was an interesting and educational evening to say the least. Took wheel & fender off and proceeded to remove the axle housing as you described. Unfortunately no cherry picker or hoist to work with so I had to do it the hard way. Didn't look all that bad. Actuator discs were kinda gunky so I cleaned them up with a drill motor and wire brush and wiped down with napatha. Applied a bit of greas to the ball sockets and startred back together with it all. Just after I bolted on the brake lever and support housing, I tried to actuate the lever by hand. The lever was all bound up in the housing and would barely move with hand pressure!!! Over to the bench, drifted out the clevis pin and cleaned it all up, lubed and reassembled. put the block and nut on the brake rod and tried it again. Now it works great with only fingertip pressure! Oh well...
Good news was while I had the axle housing off I found the fluid in the differential cloudy and congealed, so all that will need to be flushed out and replaced anyway. And I will replace the oil seal while I am at it, too.
Like I said, a very educational night.

Thanks to all for your help and sound advice,
Dan

THANKS for the quick response. Great information and the photo is a big help! Eric, very interesting what you said about the problem occurring only after your tractor has sat idle for a while. Before I bought this tractor a few weeks ago, it sat idle at a dealer's yard (down by the gulf coast)for several months. I may try to see if I can get some lube in to the ball bearings and see if that helps, before I tear the whole mess out to inspect. Just got the I&T manual I ordered in the mail yestersday. From what you say and the way the manual reads, the whole axle and everything has to come out before you can remove and check the actuator discs.
I'll get back and post what I find.

Dan

Yep, sadly you have to remove the whole axle to access the brakes. I did like Aaron said below and used a cherry picker. That sure makes it easier ! In the pic you can see my axle setting upright on the planetary end. The old brake parts have not been removed yet. Note the greasy surface on the casting where my transmission oil seal was leaking.

Hi Dan,
Get your wallet out!!!!
Dry disc brakes as fitted the the 65, early 165 and other tractor makes are a real pain in the **** when they become worn. Whilst a broken spring in the actuator may contribute to the problem it is unlikely to be the cause of it.
The grabbing occurs when the ball bearings in the actuator become stuck on the ramps on which they roll due to wear in the actuator body. Normally replacement is the only answer. I have had one experience with a Leyland tractor where the problem ocurred a short while after fitting new actuators. I found some rough edges at the points where the actuator locates. These were smoothed off and the problem almost disappeared. You might check this and even add a sensible amount of heavy grease at the bearing points to allow easier movement. With the Leyland it was only about 6 bolts and the linkage to remove the brake housing but with the 65 its a whole lot more.
Let us know what you find
Cheers

Dan,

It sounds like you have one or more of the return springs broken. There are three of them and in the picture are laying by the screwdriver handle. I don't think there is any way you can see their condition through any inspection cover. They attach to the center of the cast accuator discs. You can see the three tabs in the picture.

I replaced the brakes (including new return springs) on my 65 two years ago. Guess what - sometimes my brakes will lock up now. I "think" my problem is rust forming on the cast surfaces. My problem always happens after the tractor has sat unused for awhile. No matter how lightly I touch the pedal they will lock up. It makes no difference if I am going forward or backward, but when I push in the clutch and stop, the brakes release instantly. After five or six attempts the brakes work flawlessly.

Let me suggest that you replace the oil seals at the transmission if you do a rebuild. I feel it is time/money well spent.

Good info. I would also suggest that he look at the differential carrier bearings since the plate will be off. Mine were toast. A Cherry picker would be advised as taking the axle housings off by hand was difficult to say the least! My seals and discs were in bad shape. Likely due to the water in the tranny pushing the oil out the seals, but it is all fixed now. I think....

Tell me, how did you do when you replaced the diffy bearings ? Did you shim them up to get the right pinion/ring gear clearance/contact pattern ?
Any special tools for the job ?

Bill

Hi Bill,
Yes there are special tools required for setting up the pre-load on the diff bearings.

I paid around 20 a piece for the diffy bearings. Had pennies in the trumpet and planetary gaskets. Had $13 bucks a piece in the discs. They are $17 now. Pays to do the work yourself. Had more time in labor than anything else. I would hate to pay someone else. Oh, and I had a can of spray graphite that I coated eveything down with. Except for the friction surfaces, they were left dry. Brakes work well after the initial run in. They had not worked since 1970 something when PO bought the tractor.

HTH
