Need some help boys. I"m a Minnie guy, so I"m in unchartered waters when it comes to Masseys. My neighbour has what appears to be a Mustang(decals say so). I was unable to attain a serial no. which would clear things up.... so what"s the deal, how do I know it isn"t a 22? What do I look for?

Thanks in advance.

According tothe MASSEY TRACTOR DATA BOOK, the model 22 was built from 1948 to 1953.The Mustang was built from 1952 to 1956.("cheapened up version of a 22) Some of the things that reduced cost were: Non-adjustable rear axles, bolt on side panels instead of hinged, smaller diameter rims, a lighter duty front end mount(on wide fronts), less sheet metal around the battery and a simple cover using threaded rod to hold it on. Even so, it is still a nice tractor and some could argue the "cheapening" up made it look nicer. The engines were both continental 140"s and MANY parts are the same. Some improvements were the low exhaust and Step to get on.

Look on the top left side of the transmission close to where the seat spring mounts and it should start with either 22 if it is a 22 or 23 if it is a Mustang. Sometimes you have to scrape a little rust but it will be there. Good luck

Thanks for the help. So is the model 22 and Mustang essentially the same tractor or are there mechanical differences? Were they produced in the same time period (when) and are the Mustangs more rare?
