We have a 255 diesel with the Perkins 236 4 cyl engine in it and we ordered a Tisco piston & sleeve kit for it. Pulled out the old sleeves (they were really tough to pull out) and very lightly honed the block. Went to put in the new sleeves and they slide right in - you can turn 3 of the sleeves in the block but the forth one is tighter. Tried that one in another hole and appears that one sleeve fits tighter. Has anyone else experiened this type of a loose fit? Thanks.

Are the old sleeves loose since you honed the block?

No - they won't go in, you would have to freeze them to get them back in. When we honed the block it was for only a few seconds and with oil to clean it up. Our dealer has ordered another set of sleeves for us to try. Remember one sleeve fits okay so the tolerance may be too wide on the others. If we get the others to fit a little tighter we are going yo use Loctite 620 on all of them too.

You shouldn't have honed the cylinders, that could be the reason. The replacement sleeves aren't supposed to fit as tight as the OEM sleeves.

I wonder if you have a kit that might fit the Perkins 4/203 engine that was standard on early production models MF255, engine bore was a little less might be a good place to check I have done saveral Perkins engines and always set sleeves upright in freezer overnite then set sleeve in the bore, place a heavy piece of steel on top and with a 6 lb. hammer, with out any force drop hammer on steel, sleeves will slide on down you will do no damage at all. On old sleeves I never pull, I always break them and pull out from top just a thought These are tought little engines

also to in stall the right sleeves DO NOT pound on them they bust real EZ put them in the freezer over night and keep them real cold as you install them or they will not go in

If the sleeves fit loose you could lose coolant into the oil.

I would measure the od of the old sleeves or have them measured and do the same thing to the new sleeves. With the sleeves being loose I would be afraid of the loose sleeves being pulled down by the new pistons and causing severe engine damage.
Your Perkins engine dealer may know what the bore should be and the outer diameter of the sleeves.
Federal Mogul would probably know this too if they made sleeves for MF tractors or for Perkin engines. Hal
