I just brought home a 49 pony and have a question on where to start on it. The old owner told me that they rebuilt it acouple of years ago ( I think it was more than acouple of years) and could not get it to start after. I know I need to clean the fuel system but here is the real question. It is very hard to crank over by hand. and the starter can"t do it at all. It seems that if I let it set for a time then it cranks like it is almost stuck. Should I pull the head or pan. or what? Thanks in advance Steve

You probably need to tear the engine down and measure the crankshaft journals and see how the
cylinders & pistons look. You probably need to measure the cylinders. The bearings may be too tight. Hal PS: I would check the ring gap on those rings too.

Sounds like you need a tear down to find out what is tight. Sounds like it might be bearings, but untiul you check you won't know. Where are you located? I have a Pony in the barn that I had to rebuild and I might be able to help you.

I am located in north central Indiana. About 35-40 miles north of Indianapolis. I would love help but I will have to wait alittle for the weather to warm up alittle. I don't like to work on it in the cold garage. Plus will have to wait to get parts and the inportant part is to get some funds saved up to get any parts. Thanks where are you located? steve
