I have a '69 or '70 MF 135. Oil is leaking from a weep hole under the rpm cable on the 3 cyl die engine. Took off the plate and looked for a seal but there is none present. What gives, why is it pushing oil out of that hole?

Hi,
There should be a seal in the cap. The part number for the seal is 30854 and 36862511 for the gasket. It is quite a common problem. The seals go hard and split. Make sure the new seal is fitted correctly with the garter spring towards the front of the engine.

When I took off the plate there was not anything in the cap and when I looked into the hole from where the plate was (I would say it looks like it is located at the rear of the intake manifold) I saw nothing but a round metal device that had the place where the RPM cable will fit in. Is it possible the seal fell into the engine / intake manifold? I was expecting to see one thing and to my surprise I saw nothing. Thanks for any and all information.

Hi again,
Extremely unlikely that it could have got into the engine. Impossible to get into the inlet manifold.
In the end of the camshaft you should see a 'button' with the square hole for the t/meter cable in the middle of it. The seal runs on the outside of this. With the cover in your hand and looking at the inner face you should see a thick ring which is part of the aluminium cover. The seal fits inside this. Always possible that someone has taken it out but you would probably have oil 'pouring' out through the vent hole.

I helped a buddy fix a few problems on his '70 model 135 the summer before last. It had a leak at the tach drive. When we got to where the seal SHOULD have been, we found just a trace of permatex and no seal. Someone had attemted a quick fix at an earlier time. We also found a small piece of wood driven into that weep hole. (apparently an attemt to stop the leak)

It never ceases to amaze me how people will go to so much trouble to do a cobbled "fix" when repairing something correctly can be so much easier.

You are going to need to parts to fix your oil leak. 1 of 636 372 M1 seal 1 of 731 209 M1 gasket

Mabie Bros, Kirkville NY has them in stock Their phone number 315 687 7891. Ask for Lacy in parts. Make sure the "weep Hole" is not plug. That is why it is called a "Weep Hole".
