I have a 1951 Massey 44 that I am starting to work on. My question is what was the original battery set up? Right now it has a very large 6 volt battery (dead), however the cable has 2 battery connectors that suggests that it used to have 2 smaller 6 volt batteries wired (parallel?) together. Does that stay at 6 volt or does that change the voltage? What was original, and what are people doing now as an original and nonoriginal replacement? My father in-law said that had always been a hard starting tractor. I do plan on replacing the cables, wondering on any suggestions on that issue too. Sorry for the long question. Thanks for the help.

If you hook 2 6V's together, you have a 12V.

I started my 44 Special for years and years with a 6 volt positive ground system. But it was never an easy start. I eventually switched to positive ground 12 volt and was able to get the generator and regulator to charge the 12 volt battery by adjusting the regulator. Used it that way for another 5+ years before selling it to a friend who is still using it like that. To get extra cranking power, yours may have had two 6 volt in parallel which leaves it at 6 volt.

The 44 and 44 Special start pretty hard on 6 volt unless everything is perfect with the battery and cables (big cables - at least 00). Most users and enthusiasts probably go to 12 volt and an alternator.
