My question is did they make an after market road gear or overdrive (behlen or hiesler) for a 101 Massey Harris? I have a 1945 101sr that has no road gear in it. We would like to run it in some of the antique tractor drives in the summer, But it's too slow.

It probably has a "B" transmission that was used with the steel wheel versions during the war. My two 101 Juniors have the "B" transmission with the slower fourth gear. Both are late 42 models. One is cut down steel, the other has full steel wheels. Look near the stamped serial number on the transmission case. There should be a "B" stamped there also. At least mine do.

Go to a salvage yard. Buy an old auto rear end. Put pto knuckle on drive shaft. Hook to draw bar on tractor. Put tractor in neutral and let clutch out. That will push you any speed you want to go. You may need to add some weight to pusher to keep from bouncing. We did that on a 1936 B JD. It works great.

Are your tires undersize? Check your engine RPM. My son has a 101 Sr. and it has a road speed of 17 to 18 MPH with 13.6 x 38 rear tires.

This answer is not guarented 100%,IF you only have 3 speeds forward,THEN the high gear is locked (blocked)out but the fourth gear is in there and willgive you a 15-17 mph speed. If you have 4 speeds forward then you don't have a true road gear(built for steel wheels)and there isn't too much left to do.If you only have 3 speeds, then take your shifter top off and see how it is blocked(it is removeable to give you 4 speeds).Too much water has passed under the bridge(years) but it is on the rails blocking 4th.out.Good Luck

massey333,
I have four gears forward 4th is the fastest it a about 8 mph. So there's nothing that can step it up short of changing the actual gears in the trans. if 4th is not a road gear alreadly, If I understand you correctly? They made after market setups for IH, Ford, John Deere, etc. that bolted on stepups. I was hoping there was ones for Massey Harris, But I have never seen one. Thanks for your reply.

I just dug some old books out,They weren't too clear on the RPM and gear speeds, but they showed a 10mph gear,a 12.25 and special order 17mph which was all I ever saw back when we were tied in with Massey.NOW I'am not telling what to do,but can be done.A overdrive unit off a old Borg trans or (I'am not sure on lenght)a overdrive unit like sold for Pickups now.Are you on 28s-30s or 38s,because the trans are the same and so your speeds will be diff.as such.

MASSEY333, I have 12x38 tires on it, But I don't know what RPM's it is running. How much can I turn the RPM's up too safely on that old 6 cylinder 2000 or more? Thanks for your help!

Slow Poke,I can't give you a safe answer, but we have overhauled 3 of those engines and are allowed to turn them 2300 in Div.II pulling("and we do run them over 2000 Ginning around on the farm") BUT I KNOW NOTHING of the Cond.or state of your motor so unless you know what shape it is in,2000 Max.60 Yrs.ago it was sold to run 1800 LOADED all day,so 10% or 20% over that Free Idle would have been apx.2150 RPM back then.Your call on the engine cond.
