i have a 165 diesel at full throttle the tach reads about 1450 rpm. the tach acts like its working properly it reacts when i open it up or slow it down is there another method to read the rpm to see if the tach is acurate. i just bought it so i am not sure if its right or not doesnt really sound like its cranking any faster than 1450 throttle lever wont go any further. imnot sure if it just needs adjusted or what dont really want to start tinkerin with it untill i know a little more about it thanks RICK

HI,
Sounds like your tachometer has seen better days!
The drive is normally by a magnetic field which is created by the cable turning the mechanism inside and creating the magnetic field. The needle responds to this.
Tachometers can be repaired by specialists but you might be better with a new one, gen or not.
