Our 2745 started getting a bad habit forming. It didn't like to start warm and started to take a small sniff of starting fluid to fire off. There was no puff of white smoke when you hit the key for the first start of the day as one expects from the Perkins V-8. We went to the local diesel shop who works on about all of the kiddie trucks and farm items. In hand was all of the model and serial number information for the Lucas rotary on the 2745. They looked up the pump and found it to be original and one of the largest rotary pumps made by Lucas in the late 70's. The pump requires 2.2 psi of pressure to the injectors for the springs to release at the nozzle. The thing that I didn't realize is that there is a 10% tolerance drop before the unit just will not start. They claim that IF one rebuilds the pump as we are planning in the next 2 weeks, to set the pressure to spec (2.2) plus 5%. This will allow for slight break in variation and positive starting. They tell me that the high speed flows are set at 2800 RPM and idle flows are set at 500 RPM. The slight increase will smoke slightly black under moderate load with no smoke under no load. Quoted price was $360.00 for Lucas parts and $350.00 labor. The labor would include a service call to the house after 10 hours to check settings and timing after break in. But it sounds like the key issue was the +5% pressure to start the 540 reliably.

Thanks Dave. My 2805 has a Bosch pump on it also. Is there a Bosch pump that is a bolt in on the 2745? I have a Minimec pump off of a 540 combine engine, but it uses a very diffrent drive system than the 2745 with the Lucas pump, and it is too long for use on the 2745 due to no room for the exaust Y mounting bracket.

They indicated that there was no replacement for the numbers we provided. I didn't spend alot of time looking for a replacement simple because I like to keep things original. But thats just me.

Is the Lucas the same thing as a CAV? My 2745 has a CAV rotary pump, which works good, but now I"m worried about what to do if it ever needs any work.

Dave, I hope they can do it for you. I took one in to a diesel shop and was told parts were no longer available 2years ago. That was not a very good pump when they were new. Massey had a update kit to replace that pump with a simms pump like was in a 1155.Worked quite well.Lowered fuel usage and increased lugging power. I put a bosch A pump in my 2805,can't tell it is the same tractor. Starts easier than it ever did.Hope things work out for you. Harlan

CAV is the same as Lucas. According to the tech, the parts are still out there and available. They made pumps for the 640 cube engines as well. Our 2805 has a Simms on it. If it means lower fuel consumption, I'd be tempted to do the Bosch. We really don't need the 140 ponies, this is only a planter tractor. It gets enough hours per year to grease one time and fill the fuel tank twice if we are lucky.
