MF50 Generator vs Voltage Regulator

How do I determine whether the generator or the VR is the reason the battery isn't getting charged?

The ammeter works enough to show a discharge when I hit the glow plug, but never shows a charge once the engine starts. The battery also eventually dies so I'm pretty sure it works.

Thanks.

I think your generator is a Delco Remy. Your generator will have an A and F terminal. Unhook the F wire at the regulator and ground it or put a jumper wire on the F terminal of the generator and ground the other end. If it charges now the regulator is bad. If not fix the generator problem first.

Interesting results. I grounded it but nothing happened so I assumed it was the generator.

When I took it off, the ammeter showed it charging.

Whatever it was, I hope it keeps working.

Purchase an inexpensive voltage meter. Take a reading on the battery when the motor is running. You should show at the battery about 14 volts if it is a 12 volt system. You can check the voltage at the generator but some people don't care to get that close to moving equipment. You can take the generator off and have it checked at any auto supply (free test). If you have 14 volts at the generator then the problem will be the regulator. Also if you have a true generator remember that they require more RPM's to charge than an altnator so you may need to increase the throttle when checking the voltage. At idle you may only have 12.5 volts.
