I would use the required 90 wt mineral oil. You can buy cheap oil, but good oil is cheaper than repair parts and labor.

This oil is required for the transmission, some bearings are brass, later oils with not offer proper lube for these older type bearings.

Remember you have to lube both trans and hydraulic pump.

you might want to use the permatran as it is refined better and will take the heat and pressure . that other oil has tendency to foam and collect moisture in my experience .

Manual calls for 90w mineral oil (GL1) Summer and 80W (GL1) for winter use. Massey dealers push the Permatran III but most folks use the Universal Tractor Fluid. It is about 25 bucks for a 5 gallon bucket at TSC. You will need 8 gallons. The UTF is thicker than Permatran and thinner than the 80-90W gear oil. As the fill point is in front and the dipstick is in the rear, put in 7 gallons, wait overnight, then put in the last. As it did not register immediately on the stick, I poured in all 10 and came out the next morning to find my dipstick floating out. Big Mess...
