Recently replaced steering column top and bottom seals, all filters and ended up with a hard starting, black smoke belching,short of power tractor that runs and has lots of oil pressure at the guage but will push oil out of the oil pan vent hole at bottom of motor at the rate of 6 quarts per hour...have i blown the rear main or could i have a wrong filter preventing circulation...or any thoughts...seems like oil is being pushed out..
tractor was fine before our attempt at maintenance...
thanks...

Firstly a 1970 would be a 135 and not a 35. What do you mean by oil pan vent hole? Could you mean the vent hole for the clutch housing behind the oil pan and under the gear shifts. If it's engine oil coming out, it sounds like the rear engine seal. Dave

If it suddenly started right after you performed the filter change, I would have to think it has something to do with the filter change. If it was running fine before and then started running rough right after, then sounds like it is something you did that caused it. Just my .02

Hi,
A bit difficult to make a connection between the two. For the oil leak; Have you run the engine with the dipstick removed? If you have are you getting smoke and a lot of oil drops being thrown out? Possibly you have excessive crankcase pressure.
Remove the breather pipe from the rocker cover and check that the metal pipe is clear. They frequently block at the bottom.
By UK tractors 1970 is around the changeover from rope seal to lip seal. It is unlikely that you have done any damage to the rope seal and I doubt any damage to the lip seal if fitted.
For the black smoke;
Does your fuel lift pump have a glass bowl? If so there is a strainer above the bowl. Don't forget that there is (should be)a strainer on top of the fuel tap as well. Even if you have the wrong filter there should be a by-pass valve in the filter head.
Is your oil pressure any higher now than before?
