Hello You old time Massey Mechanics,
I have a 22 Massey Harris 1950 standard tractor. I brought it in the garage and see that is has a leak in the rear end, where the axel assembly holder joins the main rear body of the tractor. Does anyone have any idea how extensive of a fix this is? Thanks,
Mike

Currently replacing seals and bearings on my 22.
I have seal numbers and the outside wheel bearing numbers if you need them. You will need to check the bearings, often loose bearings are the reason the seal went bad. You can remove shims to tighten if the bearing is in good shape.

MT, you can also use an engine hoist with a light chain around each end of the housing. You'll probably have to take a big old screw driver and a hammer and hit in three or four places to get the housing to separate. Parts Manual is at the shop but I do have the new seal nubmers if you want them, let me know. Belt pulley get there OK?

Keith is that you? Yes it did, I have not got it on yet.THANK YOU AGAIN! I have a friend who has a hoist in his shop, it sounds like I should take the old Massey out there and have him help me do this. Mike Townsley

Pastor Mike-you'll need that engine hoist when you go to put that belt pulley on. Unless you've done one, let's talk before you try, just have to get the engine and clutch housing up about 1" to get it lined up. Sounds like that would be a tme to do those seals.

I just recently changed out rear seals & brakes on my M-H 22. Somewhat time consuming but not a real hard job. First remove fender, brake linkage, & rear tire/wheel. Take a 30 gallon drum with some wood shims & place under the axle housing. Unbolt it & carefully slide it out onto drum. You can get at the rear seal easily. Get it out being careful to keep in intact as best as possible. Take it to auto store & they will match it up with a new one. Inspect your brake discs at this time. Replace and/or clean before reassembly. Seal is cheap, but not the brakes.

Thank you ! I hope to get to it in the next month or two. So when you take the axel housing off, does the Axle still suspended there? I have never had on apart before.
Thanks,
Mike

MT. Yes, just carefully pull axle & housing out together as one unit. You can block up axle level to save damage to outside seal. However, there's no oil at the outer seal, so not much to worry about. You'll find that it's all pretty much common sense stuff when you get it apart. If you have problems, email me.
