I have located three Massey 102's in Ontario that the serial numbers on the transmissions end with the letters SE. Does anyone know what the letters stand for and also the serial numbers on these tractors show that they should be 101's not 102's.
Sure could use some help. Thanks

I don't know for certain what the SE stands for, but many 101/102 juniors have JSE stamped after the serial number. My guess is that the J stands for Junior. The S is for Standard and the E is for Electric start.

I can tell you why the serial numbers fall in what appears to be the wrong catagory. Originally in 1938/1939, the number 101 was used for gasoline models and the number 102 was used for kerosene models. The kerosene tractors (102s) had larger displacement engines to produce the same horsepower from the less powerful fuel. In example, in 1939 the 101 Junior had a 124 ci engine; while the 102 Junior had a 140 ci engine. Things changed in 1942. Most likely having something to do with the war. The 101 Super used a Chrysler 217 ci engine which Massey stopped using at this time. It was replaced by a Continental engine of 226 ci. and called the 101 Senior. At the same time the 102 (senior)was created using a 244 ci continental engine for Kerosene. In 1943,the 101 Junior had a 140 ci engine; while the 102 Junior had a 162 ci engine. At this time Massey stopped using the 140 engine and used 162 engines for both gasoline and kerosene. Since the gasoline model now had the larger engine like the 102 Junior, it was renamed the 102G Junior. The G standing for Gasoline. Likewise, to follow suit the 101 Senior was renamed the 102G (senior). However, the serial numbers for the gasoline models (102G and 102G junior) continued on were the 101s left off. Thus the numbers for 102Gs will be found in the 101 listings in any book.
