Stalls after 15 minutes

I"m running a 1957 TO35 gas with a Davison Loader. Recently, the tractor will run fine for 15-20 minutes after starting from cold, then stall. After that, it starts again (intermittently) but I can"t keep it running for more that a couple of minutes. The longer it rests, the longer it seems to run.

There is one thing to note - the exhaust pipe is partly separated from the exhaust manifold. This is directing the exhaust toward the fuel line and air line. Undoubtedly this is not good, but I"m not sure how significant this is.

I"ve had a few ideas on the matter, but would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Greg

Check that the vent in the fuel filler cap is clear.

I"ve had this problem with a 35 gas and a Ford truck. Check the coil. You can check the resistance when it"s cold and when it"s hot. If the resistance goes up a lot, the coil is probably going bad. At one time I knew how many ohms it should be, but that was long ago.

When it quits pull one of the plug wires off asap and see if there's still fire to the plug. Hal
PS: No fire I would replace the coil. If there's fire its probably a fuel problem.

I bought the beast first to save time, second because I have grand dreams of restoring her. Looks like neither is being accomplished :D

Thanks all for the advice. Looks like I'll check the fuel system first, then replace my coil.

When the coil causes this problem, usually it won't start at all again for 20 minutes or so until the coil cools (depending on the weather). My guess is you have trash in your fuel line and fuel is not flowing strong enough to maintain the float level in the carb. After it sits awhile it fills the carb and runs a bit, then quits and runs poorly as fuel seeps through. Pull the fuel line from the carb and see if it flows out strong like a man peeing with no prostate problem! If not, trace the blockage.

I assume you're talking about blockage in the fuel line, and not the man peeing ;)

Then unscrew the inlet adapter and check that its screen isn't blocked by dirt and varnish.

That exhaust leak could be causing vapor lock.

A failing coil often takes about that long, sometimes a failing condenser, but condensers in my experience recover less often that coils.

Another failure with that time constant is a plugged gas tank vent. Often the gas tank cap does that venting problem and modern unversal replacements don't vent. When it starts to stumble, loosen the gas cap and see if it recovers.

My "guess" would be a bad coil, it heats up and quits. Have ya changed your condensor lately? I think I would get that exhaust fixed whether or not it affects the running. Good Luck with it!

Well , you say exhaust leak's near fuel line tends to direct me to thinking you're having a vapor lock . Fix the exhaust leak & try it . If it still does it , since you say it'll run for a few minutes & quits but will restart after it cools also leads me to think you have a bad coil . My thoughts anyhow . HTH ! God bless, Ken

the most dangerous thing a man with an old tractor can own is a visa card. after dragging home a to20 a few years ago. i had the same problem with it. it had been sitting for years but the price was right. after spending 185.00 for anew carb from stevens, i finally fixed it with a new 20.oo fuel shut off valve in the bottom of the tank that was full of sand and crud . never stopped again. still have the old carb , wish i still had the tractor. kind regards jg
