I have an old 1970 Massey 165 Diesel that I need some advice on. This thing runs great and starts everytime no matter how cold it is. The Hydraulics took a dump on it though and the clutch is adjusted all the way out and gonna need to be replaced.

I know I'm not touchin the hydraulic work myself, that's goin to the dealer. My question is on the clutch. How big a problem is this to replace, can it be done at home or is it gonna need a shop with special tools. I know the tractor has to be split to get to it.

The dealer wants $1800 for the clutch and another $2000 worse case scenario on the hydraulics. I can see the Hydraulics but I just don't know that I'm gonna spend $4 grand to put an old tractor back together that's only worth that much to begin with. If I could do the clutch myslef this would be an easier decision.

I have rebuilt the 2-stage clutches in both my 65 and 165. Get an I&T repair mamual if you don't have one. It describes the procedure very well and it shows the special tools, which can easily be fabricated. I would not hesitate to tear into another one.

I've done a few truck clutches in the past and they're no problem just nothin like this with the dual stage before. For splitting the tractor I figure I'd just fab up a set of stand with casters to make that easy instead of messing with jacks just waitin to fall over. I'm sure the clutch is worn cause it's slippin to the point that the tractor is moving signifcantly slower now and doesn't have near the power. I've had the shackle on the pedal adjusted to the max for quit a while now knowing the time was comin.

As far as the hydraulics. The seals have been kinda weak for years now, lifted just fine but if you shut the tractor off with any weight on the arms it would slowly drop over the course of a few hours, but no big deal. Well, it froze up solid here for a weeks or so and when I went to move a round bale it would'nt lift it at all with the 3 point and only just barely get it off the ground with the front loader. Prior to this it would pop these bales right up no problem on front or back, even on both ends when I needed to move more then one at a time. On the rear, if I set the controls to lift and I helped push the bale up it would lift it but as soon as I let go it would drop right to the ground, and I'm not superman here.

Big Dean has some good info on this, and you will find another writeup under the "Articles" section to the left - under general info, "Assembly notes - MF 35 and up" that covers most of the points where I screwed up!

The clutch job is fairly straightforward. Two of us, both shadetree mechanics, replaced the clutch on a MF35 in about 2 hours. I got the clutch from Bareco as the old one had worn internal linkages. It cost less than $500 five years ago.

Previously local MF dealer had done the job, rebuilding the clutch, but it lasted less than 3 months. Needless to say the tractor has not been back to the dealer since.

Hi,
You are looking at spending a lot of bucks on what you say is a fairly old tractor. As far as the clutch goes it is not always necessary to replace the complete clutch unit. The Spicer Laycock Dual Stage unit can be overhauled quite easily. There are special tools that we use but nothing really that cannot be got around with the help from your friends on this site and a little bit of ingenuity.
The first potentially dangerous part of the job is to be able to split the tractor safely, support both sides and get it back together again.
Removing the clutch unit is straight forward. We have a screw-down clamp to strip the unit. A simple copy can be made quite easily. Once the unit is stripped you can get non-gen parts as required. It is necessary to replace the clutch with the plates and spiggot bearing in line. Do you have anyone nearby with a lathe who can turn up a spiggot to the size of the shafts? Adjusting tools do not have to be 100% accurate, what is mor important is that the adjustments are the same. Refitting is straightforward as are final adjustments. A local garage or machine shop should be able to help with anything you need.
A good shop manual is always worth buying.
As for the hydraulic problem, please tell us what is and is not happening and we can go from there.

Ok your talkin to an ametuer here. Where do I count these splines, or is this something that has to be done after the tractor is spilt and I can see the shaft. I know it's a dual stage so that narrows it down.

Hi,
Going by UK model changes yours is coming up to the time when the 12" clutches were introduced. In all probability you will have one of the 11" units mentioned by Kevin. It will narrow things a little if you can identify the engine model.
The early AD4.203 had the exhaust on the left from the seat. Later 165's had the A4.212 engine with the exhaust on the right. UK models from about late 1970 had the same 212 engine but with oil immersed brakes instead of the dry disc type. Immersed brakes are identified by 5 notches in the edge of the trumpet housing below the hinge pin lugs.
