Anyone have suggestions on where to start digging into a Massey 2745 (might be a 2805 as it has the turbo-- but likely aftermarket & has engine lid for 2805 but not original - likely same anyway), for a 24-speed transmission that kills the engine everytime you let off the clutch?

Bought it this way as "parts" for another 2745 though I"d like to approach fixing it before disounting it for dismantling.

When first arrived it seemed as if it was hydraulic as it "appeared" to shift Low-med-high, rev -- with the 24-speed hydroshift, BUT would die the second you let out the clutch. But last week - after letting it sit for several months) I climbed up into it & for some reason it started (barely to go forward .... & then heard the common "clicking" sound you"d hear as if the parking brake were engaged... & felt as though something was "bending".. then stopped solid, same as before & killed the engine. Now does exactly as it did before BUT also now it won"t shift properly with the high--low-med-rev hydroshift (moves, but off & won"t go into positive gear.

The old owner thought it was the hydraulic component that powers the hydroshift which meant splitting the engine off -- a MAJOR undertaking for this size of tractor, but with the recent test it seems more likely something has gone amiss on the shifter? (i.e. right side of the case)???? The old owner knows more about these than I do as he"s had this one apart so I"m torn between my suspicion/evaluation/ on this recent shifting thing & what he said it needed. Where should I start poking around? Many thanks for your expertise & guidance in getting started.

I own a 2775 and agree with the checking of your hydraulic pressure at the three taps. My tractor has a parking rod (on the left side) that does not lock the brakes...but locks the transmission by way of a parking paw and gear. I was wondering if this cable might be stuck leaving it engaged? If I forget to release mine, it dies immediately after releasing the clutch (while in gear). It also had some brake problems two years ago causing the brake to stay engaged. It would move, but not very easily. I have researched this tractor alot and learn something new everytime. I also had it lock into 4th and 5th gear at the same time which caused it to die everytime the clutch was engaged.
Good Luck.

I'm with Tom. You need to hook up some guages to see what is hydraulicly going on. There are three 1/8 pipe plugs in the ports near the valve body to be tested. There should be no preasure at any guage in intermediate. I think Rainer is refering to the two "timing pins" in the valve body which could cause "labored shifting," but doubt that it would totally stall the engine. You have looked at the shift cable and linkage under the cab on the right side, And all seems to be tight and normal? Does the lever shift from low to reverse easily? Just trying to help?

Mathew:

I just bought a 24 speed 2805 with tranny problems. I'll be watching for your progress. Maybe with a little help from guys like Bill, Tom and Rainer we can get them going. We run a 24 speed 2705 that has been a very good tractor for us.

JP.

I have a 2675 massey witch has the side shift H pattern i had a simmerler problem in the transmission there little pins that keep the gears spacing right if thats gone when u go to putt it in high mid or low when the pins gone it will slide a gear in the wrong spot and move and then die out thats were the clicking sound comes from! I have a perkins 6 cylinder with turbo! Hope i Could help! if u have a locale massey dealer or a good tractor mechanic have them help you troubleshoot it. You should not hve to seperate the tractor. if u did that it danguroes and could run in to more problems.

It appears to me that you have two of the packs trying to drive at the same time. I don't think it is a Hydraulic problem unless you have a problem with the shift valve. Intermediat doesn't require any hydraulic pessure to hold as this clutch is engaged by a bellville washer behind its pressure plate. When in low the multi power valve directs oil to the low pack engaging it and simultaenously directs oil to the intermediat pack releaseing it. When shifting to high the valve directs oil to the high multi disc pack engaging it and simultaenously to the inetermediat pack releasing it. In intermediate the oil is dumped from all the packs allowing the bellville washer to engage intermediat. Reverse uses the the low pack through a different set of gears when the lever is pulled rearward. What I have described is what is known as the "L" pattern. This was the later version of the transmission. The earlier tractors had an "H" pattern. Massey had a program to convert all of the "H" pattern transmissions to "L" patterns but many did not get changed. The best way to troubleshoot the hydraulics is to put three 500 lb. guages on the mutipower valve and see if it operates correctly. If you decide to do so, I can give you the procedure and the numbers. Some of these tractors were very troublesome, but when fixed properly they were quiter durable.

Hi
Cannot help in any way but I am very interested in what others may have to say and the advice they will give. I to have a 2805 V8 here in Scotland with the 24speed which seems to work fine. Here"s hoping you have success and get it fixed.
Bill
