24 Speed Transmission Q's

I have some questions for any of you who have had a 24 speed transmission apart. I think that they are all the same 2675, 2705, 2745, 2775, and 2805.

I have a chance to get a 2805, with the transmission shot, fairly cheap. It only goes forward (in all eight gears) and the power shift does not work. Also, maybe related, the three point hitch seems to be stuck in the up position. I could not get the 3ph to move.

Are all of the frictions in the power shift clutches likely to be shot?

Is there any chance that the problems could just be bad orings and seals?

I would be doing all of the labour, does anybody know about what the parts only for a trans rebuild cost?

If it costs too much for a complete rebuild could I set it up so that I have only the eight speeds in low and reverse? I would use the tractor for pulling my digger and 1st gear low is the only gear that I really need (and reverse, of course).

Thanks,

JP.

JP,
I own an MF2775 and have a bad engine. I talked with several mechanics and MF shop foremen about the 24 speed transmission. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I found was this...start the tractor and put it in 7th or 8th gear and reverse. I know, the first thing everyone will say is that the interlock will prevent you from doing this. Not true. It will go in with a little wiggling and tries. With the throttle set at about 1,000 rpm's, hold both brake pedals down and release the clutch. Make sure no one is standing near the tractor in case your brakes are working properly. If the engine does not die and the tractor doesn't move, your high and low clutch packs are not working. I checked several 2775s and 2805s at farm sales and it works for a quick check without gauges. Obviously, gauge pressure readings are best and will confirm this. If you give up on this project, my 2775 was gone through completely and of course, then the engine went. I have been looking for a 2775 or 2805 engine to put in it. Let me know...Good Luck.

Wayne:

Of course, what am I thinking, I've got my 2705 shop manual sitting on the shelf, why didn't I think to look in there for test procedures!

The 2805 is only 10 miles away, I'll hook up some gauges tomorrow.

The power shift lever is the upside down L pattern, same as our 2705.

Thanks,

JP.

The transmissions are not quite the same. The V-8s have a longer input shaft than does the 6 cylinders. The shaft,s might be interchangable (depending on early or late production). But the 24 speed unit would have to come completly apart to change them. The 8 speeds you presently have are direct or (intermeadate) drive , but no reverse, You need the low side to get reverse. And it sound like the o-ring's on low piston are blown, so low clutch disc will not be good.Other o-rings an the other two clutch discs are probably not good either Do you have the shift pattern that is an upside down L or do you have he old H pattern? Do you have a linkage from the 24 speed valve body on the lower right side hooked to the clutch shaft.? You should have the L with no linkge. To really find out what is happening I think you should hook up three guages to the test ports(three 1/8pipe plugs) near the valve body, and really see what is happening
