Looking to remove the front pedestal on my 44 special (narrow front) for a project. Just from looking at it I take the bolts out on bottom of the frame holding the pedestal on. What do I do about the steering gear? can I remove the shaft and pull the gear case out with the pedestal or how does it work? any help appreciated thank you.

Eric,

If you unhook the steering knuckle nearest the steering gearbox and undo the bolts underneath the pedestal, you can roll it from out of underneath... I do believe I had to roll it towards the back (left the tires on to make it easier), and tilt it on a angle. The hole in the "tub" is big enough that the gearbox will come out, tilt is only because of the steer shaft. *Use Caution: the pedestal is quite heavy.. I'd say close to 200 pounds* This was on a 33, and I was changing from a wide to a narrow and vice versa (pulled narrow from mine, wide from parts and swapped)

Another thing to keep in mind is the pin in the knuckle is a tapered roll pin... and will only come out in one direction (or they are on the 33's and 44's, not positive on specials)

Hope this helps.

Brad
