First If the Neg Battery cable goes to a bolt on the side of the Engine does this mean it's Neg ground? Also the front of the engine around the Water pump on the 65 seems noisy. Is this normal for a 65? Tractor runs great but seems a little noisy. Thanks for your time

One other possibility to check is the power steering pump (runs off of timing gears). Mine was always noisy until I finally read the manual and it said I should use trans-hyd fluid, not power steering fluid. It has been quiet as a mouse since.

Does anyone have experience with the Pertronix ignitor? How well do they work?

That was my next question. LOL Where do you get the trans-hyd fluid? Auto parts store or from dealer. My power steering is low. Still didn't get my Manual so not sure what to use. Should I drain the rest out and refill or just top up? thanks

If your pump is low, that could account for the noise; mine is very sensitive to even moderately low fluid levels. I used a trans-hyd fluid I had picked up from the local farm supply store (don"t remember the brand, but I doubt it will matter). Don"t put 90W in the power steering pump; I doubt it would even circulate. I just rechecked my manual and it indicates that type A automatic transmission fluid should be used in the pump, but I know that somewhere I read trans-hyd is an appropriate substitute. Anyway, I have been using trans-hyd in mine for four years with no problems. I"d suggest you drain the old fluid before refilling.

For your info, straight 90W mineral oil (GL-1) was recommended for the tranmission in warm weather and 80W (GL-1) in cooler weather, although trans-hyd is also fine if your seals are still good (and it obviously gives much better pump performance in cooler weather). Apparently the straight 90W mineral oil can eventually lead to paraffin build-up in the hyd pump and valves; I haven"t had this problem yet. Whatever you use in the transmission, DON"T put 80W-90 gear oil in it. This is generally a GL-5 category oil, and the additives will destroy the bushings in the transmission.

Your welcome Tom. If you just bought the tractor, enjoy it. The MF 65 is a great tractor. I have had mine for over 12 years, and last year put up almost 5000 square bales with it (baling, raking, bale wagon, etc. )

If you want the 90wt gear oil that was origonally in the tractor the PN at NAPA is 65-205 for a 5 gallon bucket. It also comes in a 1 gallon jug.

That's for the power steering? 90w gear oil

Hey Tom, The neg cable attached to the chassis does indeed indicate a neg ground system. A 3 cell battery indicates a 6v system; a 6 cell, 12v. Not sure if 65's were ever made in any other config than 12v neg ground.

A noisy front end could indicate a belt-driven problem or something more sinister. I would suggest pulling the belt and run for a short time and see if the noise goes away. The water pump or generator could easily be the culprit. The timing gears, oil pump, and governor are all driven off of the front of the crank, so these are possibilities as well. Mine makes a light squeak due to the new belt trying to rub the paint off of the sheaves.

Are you close to Pittsburgh?

Aaron

Aaron, Thanks for the reply. I live in Clarks Summit. (Near Scranton) Wanted to buy an Electronic control Module and needed to Know the ground. I'll try the belt thing. The noise isn't terrible but it is there. Never had a tractor before so don't know what to expect. Any views on the Control module. Worth the money? thanks

I take it the control module is the Pertronix ignitor. There are three different ignitors used on the 65. Check out the parts page on this site for a breakdown of what ignitors go in what distrib. There is an id tag on the back side of the unit that will need to be checked. The part number following the description is the Pertronix part number as well.

HTH

Aaron
