Hold on there. Its is possible your Pony was not gray. I own a Gray pony took alot of photos to document it before restoration. There is a misconception that all Pony"s in 1954 were gray. Not so , The only reason a few of them ended up gray was due to the resistance of the privatly owned Ferguson dealers to sell the red ones. The Massey dealers in 1954 still were selling the red ones at the same time.

I have a 1954 red Pony #22,916 and a 1954 gray #23,681. There are a few differences in the 2 tractors. The front of the gray Pony has a front axle more similar to a Pacer. According to my book #22,669 to 23,148 should be red and were built in 1954. But ALWAYS remember with Massey.... Never say never and never say always.

Could you be more specific with the different things about the red and gray Pony's.I don't know what the Pacer axle looks like.Mine has the radius rods beefed up with angle iron, looked to me like an add on but I'm not sure.I will have to take a good look at it.

The support rod running back at an angle has an extra piece of bracing added to it. It is not angle iron, just flat steel welded to the round brace. Most pony's have just a piece of round stock as the brace. I have however, seen a 1954 red pony with this extra piece that had a higher serial number than my red 1954 pony. There is currently a 1954 Massey Ferguson painted pony on Ebay that should be a gray that if you look closely, has the extra brace.

I trudged through the snow this morning behind the barn to check the pony.It DOES have the support you mention and not angle iron,(I was mistaken)on the radius rods.I looked very closely and found RED under Gray paint.Do you think its possible, being so close to being a 54'that the dealer had it painted? Maybe someone replaced the front axle and painted it gray, but why would someone do all that.I tried to send a picture of but can't figure out how yet.

Most of the gray pony owners I have spoken to have found red under the gray, except for the air cleaner assembly which has black . I was told the red ponys went back thru the line and were painted gray. Also some unsold gray ponys ended up being put back in red .Now you have red -gray-red. What a mess!!!!! !

Well this site says the 1954 models started with serial 22669. Who knows maybe you have the first prototype of the gray paint with the changes. Personally me, I'd paint it gray list it as a Pre 1954 prototype . Then I would stick a big sign next to it saying " This was the first Pony Harry Ferguson looked at before he gave the OK for the 1954 gray paint color change.

If you did it I wouldn't question it due to the early serial number. Anything could of happened back then and as we get older no one knows the true story.

To be honest it is very hard to say. Your serial Plate says Massey Harris Ferguson in 1953. That is curious. I double checked my plate on the 1954 red Pony and it has the traditional Massey Harris Pony plate while the gray says Massey Harris Ferguson. As far as the front end goes, it is possible it was upgraded to handle loader weight better. I guess I am stumped unless you read the numbers wrong. Assuming that isn't the case, if you are restoring I guess I would look for the blue decals on the hood and take pictures. The problem with these odd tractors is that no one believes unless you verify everything.

I triple checked the serial # with a magnifying glass
and it's 22624,the plate is in very good condition.
This tractor sat out for a long time before I got it and covered it,so its really rusty.I checked the hood for blue decals, the only decals left are the PONY and looks to be dark possibly blue. It's not on the nose, there is one on each side on the dog leg closest to the grill. If I could figure out how to load pictures to this site I would show you guys what I got.Anybody know how?
