Massey F-40 - what is it?

Looking at buying a Massey 35 -or- an F-40. I know what the 35 is, but what exactly is the F-40? I've heard it described as a utility tractor, whatever that implies. It's a beautiful machine - but what are the differences from other like-sized Masseys? Is it more desirable than a 35? More collectible? I want to use the tractor for simple field work so I don't plan on a showroom resto.

Thanks for any help!

The F-40 was only made in '56 and '57, and about 9100 were built. They are heavier than the TO-35, but have the same engine. They will haul a round bale no problem if you have a little weight up front to hold the front down. They have the two stage clutch (live PTO). They are excellent tractors.

The sheet metal on the F-40 is also different. They are a nice tractor made in Utility and Hi-arch styles too. THey are a good tractor.

Gearhead, the Ferguson F40 was essentially the same tractor as the Massey Harris/Massey Ferguson 50 tractor that was produced through 1963??? The only difference I know of was the color scheme. The company made the different tractors when Ferguson merged with Massey Harris and both companies needed to continue producing their brand for a couple of years while transitioning dealers. They had the Continental 134 gas engine and overall a really good tractor. Physical size is just a bit larger than the 35 but still an excellent utility tractor.
