I replaced the PTO seal when I re-did the brakes, but the *@$! thing is still leaking. The PTO shaft surface looked fine where the seal runs, but I didn"t check the diam with a micrometer. Could oil be leaking thru the o-ring around the bearing carrier which slides into the trans housing and is retained by the plate around the shaft hole? Or do I need to replace the whole PTO shaft?

Hi,

Did you renew the bearing when you installed the new seal? If not, it might be the bearing that is causing the shaft to run out and the seal to leak. The shaft needs to run true for the eal to work properly. Also, if the shaft is grooved a slip on readysleeve might help you out there also.

HTH

John

Thanks John - I'll check the bearing more closely when I disassemble. It seemed fine, so I didn't look too closely. The seal running surface on the shaft looked dead smooth.

David,

I had the same problem with my 65. I was disappointed in the quality of the new seal compared to the old one. I am still putting up with the leak but was thinking I would try to move the seal forward or backward in the housing if possible. If that doesn"t work I am going to look for a different type of seal as my shaft didn"t look that worn and I really don"t want to spend that much money.

I may not have helped you much here but thought I would pass along my plans.

Hi Eric. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. My leak is a lot to put up with: loses about $100 worth of oil every few months! Plus it's messy underneath, and I have to remember to check the oil regularly. I'll ask my local bloke for a heavier-duty seal. I think bi-directional flanged seals are available in some sizes, which may be better.

If it is leaking out of the pto shaft seal a speedi sleeve might solve the problem if the pto shaft is worn.
