Been cold here in idaho. Had not started tractor since spreading manure. Thought I had better start it. Did not want to start so hit it with some either and it started right up.

It ran fine for about 5 minutes and died. It would not start again not even with more either. wondering if the diesel has gelled or what. Any ideas

to much starting fluid will damage the engine also. If it hits off starting fluid its fuel problems if it won't hit uh-oh.

Don't forget to check the little screen that is on the top of the lift pump. When mine clogged up (before I had a service manual and found out about the screen) I went through two sets of filters and all kinds of mucking around before I found the problem.
Ran good on warm days and bad on cold days. The little screen was totally plugged, it was amazing to me that any fuel at all got through.

It sounds to me like it has frozen fuel lines.Once you are able to get it going again, you may want to top it up with fuel and add about a cup of methal hydrate to keep it running.Let it run fairly well down on fuel before re-fueling,then add more m/h if it is still cold,so not to change the concentration.Too much methal hydrate will damage an engine.
