Just put a new set of valves in a cont. 140, the guy that ground them for me told me that before I put the head back on to paint the head gasket with alum. paint, the cheaper the better. He said that when the engine gets warm the alum. melts and makes a good seal. Has anyone ever heard or done this to a head gasket? thanks

In my experience with racing engines with steel shim head gaskets as well as other hard to seal applications, the best above all is a Permatex gasket material called Hylomar HPF, Permatex item number 25249, NAPA #765-2682. It is available in a tube. We have solved many seeping head gasket problems with it that we could not solve with any other sealant. It does not harden, allowing for easy disassembly. It is also effective for virtually all other types of gasket. Highly recommended, well known among professional builders!

Yes the paint will work but,as Glennster said the coppercoat from Permatex is better.

I did not use the copper sealant the first time I bolted my head on. However, it leaked like a sieve so I did use it the second time..... Been tight and leak free since. I should mention that I also attemted to mount all the gaskets dry since the engine had been cooked and was perfectly clean. Every gasket in the cooling system leaked. I pulled it back down and put a small film of gray silicone on all gaskets and solved the problem. Continental G176, Tisco engine kit.

Hope this Helps,

Aaron

yup i have done that before. works pretty good. permatex also makes a coppercoat aerosol gasket sealer, has little copper flakes in it. i use the permatex now.
