Can somebody give me info on what engines were used in MF 35 tractors? We have a gas 1960 35 special and I think it has a Continental engine, but there is no tag on it (there could have been one once) and I have seen articles that mentioned Perkins gas engines in them. the tractor runs good, but I think I am going to have to break down and have the head redone because it "spits" a little and this problem has gotten progressively worse over the past 10 years or so. due to its lack of live pto or lift, it's not our main tractor, but it does see a fair amount of use.

If it's a 4 cylinder it's a Continental. I don't think Perkins made a 3 cylinder gas until the direct injection diesel came out in the 135 (AD3-152). I don't understand why it wasn't used more. It was a very heavy duty engine that shared a lot of components with the diesel. I think it even had very close to the same HP. Maybe it was more expensive than the Continental? Both good engines but MF owned Perkins. Dave

Hi,
Yes the 35 does have a '152' engine, but.....
it is not the same as the AD3.152 fitted to the 135 diesel. The enggine is a 3A.152. Appearance is much the same but on a closer look you will find that the injector system, the length of the con-rods and the pistons is different...and that's just for a start.

FWIW: several catalogs show the MF35 with the Cont and an unidentified diesel (a Fram catalog says it"s a Perkins but gives no model #)...
The Fram also shows the 135 with both Perkins AG3-153 (gas) and AD3-152 (disel)...

I think the MF-35 Special used a Continental Z129 and the Deluxe used a Z134. The MF-135 Special used the Z134 and the Deluxe used a Z145, of that, I'm certain. But middle years of 135 production used a three cyliner Perkins gas.

Gerald.

The Perkins petrol engine is a 3 cylinder and I think this only cut in on later 135 tractors. The Coventry built 35s used a Standard (Triumph) Motor Co petrol but I dont think U.S. built tractors would have got this. Hope this helps, Richard.
