Ok, this may sound dumb but I have "overhauled" numerous car engines so I have an idea of what "overhauled" means. To me, that means complete dis-assembley of the engine, i.e. crankshaft out, camshaft out, heads completely redone, all new seals and gaskets, new or rebuilt oil pump, all new seals and gaskets.

I'm starting to think that in the tractor world "overhauled" can mean dropping the oil pan putting in new pistons and sleeves and a new oil pan gasket and you're done. Maybe not even taking the crankshaft out at all? Can you install sleeves and pistons without taking the crankshaft out?

This is all strange to me as I would never NOT put in new cam bearings, new front and rear crankshaft seals, rebuilt or new oil pump, etc.

Am I just weird or are there various meanings to the word "overhauled" in the automotive world and tractor world?

Steven:

I completely disregard the term "overhauled" as used with reference to a used anything unless the seller has dated receipts that can be confidently linked with the thing that is for sale.

Here is a rattle can rebuild. Ever seen one? Masking tape is optional. No wrenches are needed.... J/K I cribbed this pic off of ebay. It was not described as rebuilt, just a poor paint job...

Overhaul is a general term that is used quite liberally. Other terms such as restore, rebuild, remodel, etc are used much in the same fashion. You really have to get down to what work was actually done.

Overhaul can simply mean to re-ring or a full-on complete comprehensive rebuild. You can search on this site and find engine kits that do not require the engine to be removed, although it is rather hard to get your crank ground or to replace the rear main seal this way. Some kits completely renew the bottom end but supply no parts for reconditioning of the head. My G176 kit came with bearings, seals, sleeves, pistons, rings, pins, oil pump, valves, springs, keepers, gaskets, carb kit, points set, belt, and governor bushing. I supplied the water pump. The engine shop also replaced my front cam bearing when the sleeves were being pressed. It did not come in the kit.

The term is also relative due to who did the work. A comprehensive rebuild from a shoddy mechanic could leave you worse off than where you are now.

My experience in the tractor world is that overhauled depends on whether you are buying or selling and your own conscious. There is also an engine in tractor overhaul (new rings) engine out of tractor (new rings, bearings, seals and any other broken components and a remanufactured (all new parts and machine shop work, pistons, sleeves grind crank etc. I suspect what you are looking for would be considered the remanufactured and is something you do with a tractor you are going to keep. What you are seeing for sale is usually more of a repaired as cheap as possible to make me a buck, so I call it overhauled. I hope this helps more than confuse but the old saying "buyer beware' couldnt be any more true.

Hey, welcome to reality!!! That being said, "overhaul" is pretty much like religion and politics: something that well-meaning people can disagree on, and something that less well meaning people can exploit to seduce, con, trick the unwary, the accepting or the careless.
Personally, I"m closer to you: a complete teardown, exam and re-do where necessary, but good people can disagree on what"s "necessary", depending on their proposed use, their past experience and available $$$. Partly it"s because we"re all imperfect people in an imperfect world, and some are more imperfect than others...

Hi,
If I was a mathematician the answer or formula might be something like;
Overhaul is inversely proportional to the depth of the pocket multiplied by the enthusiasm for the job divided by the thought of it costing a lot more than originally anticipated.

There is only one overhaul and that is to strip every item, measure, test, repair and replace where necessary all items that can have a detrimental effect on the performance of the machine.

A past experience springs to mind when looking over a mini-bus for a customer. The seller said "its got a new gearbox in it". In the next breath, "I got it from the scrapyard last week"!!!
Yes....well.
