i have a chance at a MF135 with a four cylinder continental gas engine. 680 original hours (tach is working). all appears to be in excellent condition. Power steering and double spool valve(not sure what that is). i farm around 30 acres for corn and food plots. can anyone tell me about the 135's? are they a solid machine? or should i stay away? i was looking at a ford 3000. they seem to be very much the same.

The MF135 is probably the best 35 hp tractor of it"s time. The Perkins diesel powered ones are more desireable but the gassers are also well thought of. I"m not trying to rain on your parade, but I too am skeptical of the low hours. Proofmeters/Tachs can be disconnected or the tach drive can quit working and may have been repaired for the sale.

Give it carefull lookover, get it warmed up and drive it in all gears and try to lift something heavy with the hitch to check it out.

A great tractor. I"ve got the Continental gas engine and the tractor has performed wonderfully. Those hours are low, as others have said. You won"t be disappointed with the tractor if it is good shape.

135's are the most sought after tractor ! Check with any place that does farm auctions. Parts are readily available and reasonable. Way more popular than a Ford 3000. Check the archives on here. When ever someone asks what smaller tractor to buy, 135's are the hands down winner. Dave

What is the asking price? It should be going for 5000-7500 around here.

Joe:

I should have also mentioned that 680 original hours is extraordinarily low and not believeable without corroborating evicence.

That is an EXTREMELY low hour total for a tractor of that age. It's very possible that it is right, but even so, a tractor that spent most of it's life doing little or nothing can have issues related to that inactivity just as easily as one with 10,000 can have its problems. I recall seeing a 135 here on YT in the photo adds a few years ago that had less than 200 hours. It's possible. But take a carefull look at seals, insulation on wiring, condensation in tranny, and anything that may have been compromised by age and inactivity.

135's are great little tractors as a generality. The Perkins diesel is the engine of choice, with either the Perkins 3 cylinder or Continental 4-cylinders being fairly equal among the gassers.

Take a look at Big Deans site for a list of items to check when buying any 100 series Massey Ferguson.

Speaking of Big Dean, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season and get back to better health soon. We miss you.

I agree with Dean, 680 hours is a ridiculously low figure for a 135. Can it be proven? Typical figures for a 135 ought to be in the region of 2500 to 5000 hours with many going round the clock. Check exactly what you might be buying in terms of instrumentation, Multi-Power, hitch accessories etc. Other 135's may be better equipped and this might be a basic model. For the tractor the 135 is regarded as the best all-round low HP tractor. Just look at the number still in everyday use and the values they command. Cheers

Joe:

The MF 135 is regarded by many as the best small tractor produced.

Like Ford 3000s, various versions of 135s have been produced with and without live PTO and other features.

Those with Perkins diesels are most sought after as they have more power and use much less fuel than the gassers.

MF-135 is a good tractor. Competitive with the Ford 3000. 680 hours is very few for its vintage.
