Trying to help out my uncle who's in his 80's get his 165 running so he can use it to plow snow. I'm not sure of the entire story but either he ran it out of fuel or got water in the fuel and couldn't get it started. In the process of trying to get it started I guess the srarter gave out. That was about two months ago and the tractor has been sitting outside the barn since. He managed to get the starter off and had it fixed, I think just the solenoid was bad. He couldn't put the starter back on by himself so thats where I started. This is a Perkins diesel, on the right side is the fuel pump with a manual priming lever, seems to work. Next also on the right side is a fuel filter/water seperator I guess. Pulled the plug from the bottom and drained water out. It just trickles out but if you pump the primer you get a steady stream of fuel. Next going to the left side is a fuel filter. I pulled this and there was water in there also. I emptied it out and cleaned it up. Before I tightened up the filter I pumped the primer until fuel was running out. So that's pretty much where I'm at now. It will start on starting fluid but won't stay running. Any advice on bleading the system and/or getting any remaing water out. There are what looks like two hex caps or plugs on the bottom of the injector pump. Are either of these drains? I didn't want to pull them not knowing what they were.

After you get the tractor running well, check the accumulator bowl often for water build-up. In winter, it can freeze and crack the glass bowl, allowing fuel to leak out.

Be careful with that starting fluid, I have seen Perkins ruined by giving too big a whiff. Tom

The injector pump has 2 bleeder screws. Bleed the lower one first, then the upper one. You will also have to bleed the injector lines by loosening the flare nuts at the injectors (reccomended method). I found out by accident that if I loosen one injector line at the pump and crank, it will bleed all 4 lines.

I don't think that it actually bleeds all 4 lines, just that you only need to do 1 or 2 before the one cylinder will fire and then the engine will run on it's own. Done this a few times myself and it's so much easier than trying to get on the nut at the injector.

Both our 285 (Perkins 318) and Oliver 1855 will start after bleeding 1 or 2 injectors.
