Black smoke is an indication that your mixture is too rich. If you pull a plug and your carb is too rich, you"ll see a sooty fluffy dry deposit on the plugs. if so clean all your plugs and check the spark. Pull the center wire off the distributor, hold it near a good ground turn on the ignition and try an start. You should have a FAT, BLUISH- WHITE SPARK. If you don"t then check the primary ignition circuit, the points for correct gap and for corrosion or burning. Make sure the connections are all bright and tight. This is particularly important on a 6V system because they are marginal at best. Check the initial timing and make sure the advance mechanism is working. You"ll need a timing light for this. If the spark"s FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, and the timing is correct and advance is working, then adjust the carb. To adjust the carb, turn the main jet in completely, but don"t reef it down. Then turn it out 1-1/2 turns. Start up, bring it to operating temperature then accelerate from idle to max rpm. The engine should accelerate smoothly without hesitation. If it doesn"t enrich it by 1/8 turn increments> If it doesn"t improve, then go back to 1-1/2 turns and lean it by 1/8 turn and see if it improves the accel. if it doesn"t you may ahve a bad float valve or float setting or the wrong carb jet, damaged adjusting screw, etc.
