Can anyone tell me how to identify an engine that appears to be a 124 Continental but has no ID tag? Are there any other unique ID items on it that distinguishes it from a 140 for example? Thanks

Used to work with a man that had a lot of F model experience (mostly lift trucks. He said they would bore a lot of the m to make a 140.

Unless it's stamped in the block (near the top edge on the right side just under the head), there's no way to tell without removing the head and measuring the bore. Is it in a tractor now? If so, what model Massey?

I looked for stamping near the head and could see none. There are some intermixed cast and stamped numbers near the bottom of the block on the right side just above the oil pan. What do these mean?

I meant near the top edge of the block just under the head on the LEFT side (not the right) .... but maybe yours doesn't have anything there. The tin plate should have been in the middle of the left side of the block on a flat area there but it's obviously missing. THe casting numbers on the lower right wide should start with F400 which is the flathead 4-cylinder series (of 124, 140, or 162 cubic inches), all use the same F400 series block.

I had "MS" stamped next to cast numbers on a 162 I'm running in my model 20. When I went through it, it turns out is Military Standard. It came out of a yale forklift. Nice thing was that it had bigger valves, bad thing was bearings were no longer available. It was pretty expensive to have ones custom cut, champhered, and drilled(oil passage) from other bearings. Bore is the only difference between the three. There is also 2 different heads and driveshafts depending on which distributor the motor uses (or you want to use).

Thanks. Is there a "legend" printed somewhere that tells what all of those cast and stamped numbers mean?
