1st time posting, I bought this 175 diesel for $550 as a project not running. Got her running after cleaning out fuel tank, lines new filters, drove her around, popped out of gear and would not go into hi gear, fixed ring gear welded it up. Last problem is brakes did not work, I have taken left axle off to repair and it was full of oil where the brakes are, but the planetary was empty. Discs look thick. Before I get any deeper is this wet brakes? Will the axle have to be pressed out to disassemble to change seals and gaskets? My serial #9a154404 says it should be 1973 but I cannot find half moons I have read about. So far I love this tractor and I cant wait to get her fixed, Thank you for any help.

The way it has been shown to me to determine if wet or dry is by the notches in the plates between the transmission casting and the axle housings. If there are a number of notches this would indicate wet brakes. If you would like some pictures could be taken to show the difference. Also there is a difference in the rubber seals where the actuator rods enter the housings. Any of the later square axle housing equipped 100 series tractors could be converted to wet brakes so far as I know this only applies to the US made machines...Gary

Thanks for all the replys, after searching the archives on these brakes there seems to be some confusion if and when they had wet brakes, my IT manual only shows dry. I am hoping I have wet, but still not sure. It seems like the linings were brass colored as DavidP mentioned. I am at work now and wont be able to check until tomorrow, anyways I will continue to teardown to replace seals, gaskets and brakes

i just went through this myself. my massey service man said there are openings underneath the axle trumpets. they are to let you know the seals are leaking. however, they may be full of dirt or plugged to disguise it. check for them when you fix the seals. he also said the seals are not very thick.

Hi,
My information is that some US 100 series tractors did have the later 'wet' brakes.
You mention that they are 'thick'. If you have asbestos type material rivetted to the central disc then they will be dry brakes. Wet brake discs are normally quite thin, have a brass coloured lining as part of the disc and 5 holes as well as the splined hole to assist oil cooling.
It certainly sounds like you have (had)dry brakes and will need to change the seals. This job is straight forward.

I think later models were wet brakes, so you may be in luck on that one if it is indeed a 73.

Don't know how to tell the difference though...

They are almost certainly dry.

No pressing will be needed. Once you separate the axle castings from the rear end (not hard to do) the axle shafts slide right out. They are splined where they fit into the rear end and at the other end where they fit into the final reduction planetaries.

I have found that for the novice mechanic (like me) these are easy to work on.

Good Luck,
JP.
