I (well actually a mechanic friend of mine) am currently restoring a 1976 MF 185. The tractor has only approx 5000 hrs on it from new and has only had two owners. Before any work was done to it, the hydraulic lift made a "knocking" sound when under load or when raised fully. We striped all down and replaced all the components in the pump with a new AGCO repair kit. After rebuilding the noise is still present together with the new problem of the lift "trembling" with the slightest of weight on it. We are struggling to get to the bottom of this. I would appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks.

Thanks Gents,

So, what i'm reading is:
Knocking - trait of MF Hyd pump and most likely no need to fix, even if it could be (which is unlikely).

Trembling - Most likely related to Pressure Control Setting or Spring.

We'll be looking at this over the weekend and i'll let you know how we get on. In the meantime, if my (condensed) understanding above is missing some point or other, please let me know. Otherwise, thanks very much for all the advice.

One other thing would anyone know where to pick up a work shop manual for a MF 185?

Leakage in the lift cylinder or control valve could be your problem also. One way to tell if you have leakage is wether or not the lift arms stay up after the tractor is turned off. If they drop, you have a leak, which would cause the knocking/trembling you are seeing. You may need to just replace the lift cylinder piston seals.

It's not wheather or not they'll drop- They all drop on the Massey's. It's a matter of how fast they drop.

If they take a day or so with no load on them, or a couple hours with a light load on the arms, it's fine. If it drops within an hour or less (say 1/2 hour) then there is a pretty good internal leak somewhere.

Hello,
The trembling can be due to several things. The control spring adjustment can certainly cause it to happen, also the adhustment of the Pressure Control system.
It is essential that you have the correct special tools and a good workshop manual to carry out the adjustments to. Whilst a relatively simple job it is too complex to adjust by hit and miss.
The rattling is a trait of the Ferguson pump. It is worthwhile checking the condition of the dowel pins and pump body. If these are OK then there is little else you can do.
Big Dean's site may have some info for you.

Your Hyd. pump pressure relief spring (fig. Pressure control valve. ind. 7. Part# 519 313 M2) is compressed and needs to be replaced. On the third time spliting my 1080 and very close comparison to a known good hyd pump, it was discovered the origonal spring was about 1 1/2" shorter than the one in the replacement pump.

Good Luck
Merle

Yes, they all knock or rattle, but they should
not do that continually. You need to re-adjust
the hydraulic control levers slightly downward
till the clunking quits.I Don't have the specs.
in front of me but usually that is all you need
to do. There is extra strain on the system with
continual blowing of the valve. Chuck

I DON'T THINK THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE KNOCKING NOISE.I THINK THEY ALL DO IT.I KNOW OUR 35,50 AND 65 WILL ALL DO IT WHEN FULLY RAISED.MY DAD,WHO HAS HAD THEM SINCE NEW,ALWAYS CALLED IT "BY-PASSING THE PUMP" WHEN I WOULD RAISE SOMETHING ALL THE WAY.IT WOULD ALSO PULL ON THE MOTOR SLIGHTLY.JUST LET IT DOWN JUST A BIT AND IT SHOULD STOP.

My '71 150 has had that knock since day 1. It knocks when the position control is all the way raised, especially when in "constant pumping" position. I've been told it's the relief valve rattling OR the pump rattling around on the dowels that hold it in place. One way or another, mine has done it for 36 years and no ill effects.

I think the knock may just be a characteristic of the pumps MF uses. My dad has a 65 which he bought new, which makes that noise when lifting a load at low rpm. He said it has always done that since new. The knocking should go away once the 3 point has reached your height setting though. It almost sounds like you have a leak in the control valve, or lift piston, which causes the pump to work to overcome the constant leaks.

There is info in the archives. If it is a similar system to the one on my 135, the tension on the draft spring makes a big difference. It doesn't have to be out by very much and could be the source of your problems. I had trouble with the 3 pt. not lifting heavy implements all the way up. Then I broke the shaft on the control arm inside the draft spring. I got the new parts and adjusted the spring according to the MF service manual and my problems are solved. Others on here say their tractors make noise but it doesn't mean anything is wrong. I'm not sure you needed to rebuild your pump. Dave
