I have a MF 135 (1968) tractor. Is there a way of adjusting the brakes, as at present when they are applied only the offside brake works, even though the pedal lock is in place.

if tractor has had plenty of use, the ears on the pivot rod that spreads the shoes can round off and the shoes do not spread very far anymore

can be built up with weld or braze or replaced

There is a small metal cover that pivots out of the way so you can adjust the brakes. It is on the back of the cover behind the hub. The brakes are adjusted just like drum brakes on a car with a big flat screw driver. MF Poor has provided the procedure and other useful info. Dave

Here's how I adjust the brakes on my 150 (same rear as a 135)

I jack each rear wheel up off the ground so the wheel spins freely. Start adjusting the shoes until there's just a hint of drag. Back off 2 or 3 clicks. Repeat on other side. Adjust pedal ride height on inside pedal (left brake) so that 3rd or 4th click on parking brake latch has brake fully applied. Release the parking brake, then adjust outside pedal (right brake) static height to same as left brake pedal. Unless there's excessive wear, generally won't need to adjust pedals, just an occasional adjustment of shoes. It's useless to adjust worn out shoes. Also, I've worked on a number of tractors where the operator tended to use ONE brake far more than the other. The actuator would be worn out on one, making it work totally different than the other brake, if it worked at all. No amount of adjustment corrects that either.

Hello MF Poor,
I would take slight issue with you over the adjustment procedure. If the brakes on this particular tractor have not been adjusted before, you cannot be sure that someone has not adjusted the length of the rods to try and achieve better brakes. This does not work. If you are sure that the linings are in good condition and dry, the correct procedure is as follows;
Jack up both or one side of the tractor at a time and support securely.
Disconnect the brake rods. Adjust at the drums until the wheel goes tight.
Lock the pedals together and block them or tie them in the fully raised position. Adhust the brake rods until the pins can just be fitted.
Fit the split pins and tighten locknuts.
Release the pedals and slacken the drum adjuster 2 or 3 clicks. Carry out final adjustment by locking the wheels on a concrete or tarmac surface and adjust to achieve equal effort.
If after this you have good pedal pressure but poor braking effort it will be necessary to build up the ends of the brake rods and grind back to flush or just a little bit proud. This will restore the maximum amount of effort (leverage) applied to the shoes.

One must remember at all times, my opinions and proceedures are based upon my lifetime ownership of the tractor I'm working on.

I know what has and HASN'T been done to mine.

I guess not everyone has that luxury. Apparently I'm the exception rather than the rule.
