Just had my injector pump rebuilt, tractor runs good but if you stand behind it while running the fumes will burn your eyes. The shop that installed the pump says that the timming is at manifacture"s spec. Could the timming be off and if so what should I do? Had the injectors rebuilt last year, I thought that could be causing this problem. Like I said the tractor starts and runs good. Perkins Diesel Engine.
Thanks!

Hi Jimmy
I had this situation few years ago...
It was from poor fuel quality it seems that our
fuel supplier sometimes drained old fuel tanks
and resold old (may be contaminated) fuel.

Now we buy first quality fuel and it is far better. It was the case for us may be not applicable to your situation.

If your tractor has several hours of operation
the injectors may be due for a checkup...if one or more injectors drips instead of good vaporizing the fuel does not burn completely and cause fumes and bad odors.

My 2

Another thing that can cause these kind of problems & is very easy to over look is a leaking cold start glow-plug located in the intake manifold. If the things start leaking extra fuel into the intake manifold, they can the engine to possible smoke, miss, or cause excessive fumes. If your tractor has one of these in the manifold, remove it & check if it appears wet, replace it. If that does not correct the problem, have the pump timing rechecked, maybe by another shop to be sure.

Thanks, it does not have a glow-plug. As I said the tractor runs good. It's just that I know this should not run this rich, As soon as you throttle it up it dosen't seem to be as bad. Kinda of like there is fuel bulid up at start up.

If it's cold or been idling for a while, it can smoke more. I think the shop that installed the pump would have known if something wasn't right. Dave

According to the manual as well as pretty common knowledge. Diesel fumes are very pungent and irritating to the eyes. Never operate your tractor in a closed building. It is common to have to shut the tractor off when hooking up implemements. Especially with horizontal exhaust exiting at the back of the tractor. Unless your tractor has lots of smoke, everything is good. Dave
