M-H PONY ENGINE PROBLEM

About two weeks ago my father asked me to adjust the valves in his Pony (N-62 Continental). Once inside I noticed that the spring retainer caps on the exhaust valves were not correct. I then proceeded to order a totally new valve set from Yesterday's Tractors. This past weekend I started to install the new valves and found a problem. The intake valves are held in by a small pin which sticks through a hole in the valve stem. The recess in the new intake valve spring retaining cap is too deep and does not allow the actual valve stem to protrude past the retainer cap. Instead the lifter adjuster hits the retainer cap and not the valve stem which is not right. The exhaust valves fit correctly but they are a totally different setup with keepers and rotators. These are new intake valves, new retainers and new springs that all came in the same kit. Anyone else experience this problem? I am at witts end!

The intake valves take the pins and the short retainer and the exhaust valves take the spring lock, valve stem cap, and long retainer. These are pictured good in a Massey Pont Service Manual.

Again, I would like to say that I know there are shallow and deep retainers. I have a pony service manual and parts book. Something is wrong with the parts in this kit. The shallow or short retainers do not work with the new intake valves. All this money for a new kit and I might as well thrown it down a hole. Can you return parts to yesterday's tractors? I bet there is some kind of restocking charge. Curtis

Curtis: My experience with the N62 is from working on my AC model "G". I am assuming the M-H Pony is the same N62? The only thing I can think of that may be causing your trouble is, the spring retaining caps on the intakes and exhausts are different. If you accidently put the exhaust caps on the intakes you will have the problem you described. The Exhaust retaining caps have a deeper dish to them to accomodate the rotators. So if they are used on the intakes which have no rotators, the adjusters will hit on the caps instead of the valves. I hope this helps and I hope this is your problems which is an easy fix.

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes this is basically the same engine as in the Allis "G". The only difference is the starter location between a Pony and a "G" making the blocks a little different. All internal parts are the same. There are two types of retaining caps in the kit as you mentioned. I am using the shallow retaining caps and having this problem. I don't know what to do. Maybe these parts are incorrect but they all came together in the same kit. I am thinking of maybe placing a small shim washer inside the retaining cap to make it more shallow.Do you think this will work? If anyone else is thinking of using this N-62 valve kit. BEWARE!

When all else fails have you called the parts guys at YT Tractor and asked them for help?
I have found them to be very helpful and if the parts are wrong, I'm sure they can help you figure it out. I ordered the engine rebuild kit for a 152 Perkins and it turned out the sleaves were wrong even though I used their serial number break and description. They got me a Return authorization number from A&I and I sent the one kit back and got the alternate one no problem.

I am sure that if the kit isn't right they will want to know about it.
