Hi Randy -

Last question first. Second stage release is adjustable from the opening below the flywheel housing. Pedal free play should be 1/2" to 3/4"; check this first and adjust if necessary.

Down under - there are three 5/16 cap screws with lock nuts around the perimeter of the pressure plate, with the heads pointing to the rear. The clearance between the heads and the PTO pressure plate to the rear may be the problem. Factory says .080 - .090; we've found that too loose. .055-.065 works better.

They're usually set very firmly. Use a high quality wrench, and make sure it's on securely before attempting to loosen, or you'll strip the flats, and you'll have to split the tractor to finish the job.

The jumpy primary clutch can be a number of things - loose linkage, weak springs, worn pressure plate, or worn/burnt spots on the flywheel or pressure plate. May even be something else - we've got one jumping even after attacking all these points!

You'll have to split the tractor to get at these.

I have some instructions to supplement the I&T or MF shop manual - helps prevent damage to the clutch plates - if you want to tackle the job yourself, or have a non-Massey shop do it. Drop me a note if you'd like a copy.
